Going to an observatory sounds awesome, and since my parents live in Indianapolis, I could drop the kid off there and make the drive. I think it is a good idea.

August puts me back in the classroom right at its beginning, but I do understand that some of you might be able to swing it, and majority rules.

The weekend of August 10-12, 2012 could work, as it is close to the New moon (august 17), but it all depends on the club's schedule, which no doubt, has not been worked out that far in advance, but a group can always be worked in. Do you have an issue with doing it sooner? Say next Month, or in October? September 2 is before the first quarter (and will be cooler than an August observation, but warmer than in the Winter), so the moon will be out early and set by at least 11:30. That would give us the best of both worlds, because we can view the moon, Jupiter and Saturn early, and then settle in for some deep sky observation later (along with Mars, Neptune and Uranus, and maybe even Pluto, which will be up but very hard to see visually). Anyway, just some thoughts. It could be done next August, if that is what everyone wants to do.

Would that date keep you from attending Epi?
It's just the first proposal. If it needs to change, it can be. We need to lock down a date that a majority could do.

Over a weekend, I might be able to squeak it. Our school year starts the week before that weekend, and I'm a trainer for new teachers, so, I'm not sure. I say lay the plans. If I can't make it, so be it. The good thing is that you will have set something rolling here which can be expanded, and, assuming I am still in the States after next year, I will make it at one get together or another!

Exactly. We're just floating dates for now. Just keep in mind a few things when you propose a date - the weather, and where the moon will be that night(s). Full Moon dates, or anywhere near them is straight out. The closer to the new moon, the better. Also, keep in mind that members' night is always the first Saturday of the month, so that is out as well. Here is a list of moon phases and the dates associated with them for the rest of 2011 and 2012.

I could probably make either of the first two weekends in September work. Keep in mind that Sept. 2 falls on the Labor Day Weekend, but still for me - doable.
