Why? Once one abandons the superstitious nonsense, one continues to get bombarded with it day in and day out, non-stop, 24/7. The religious are knocking on your door, they are teaching crap to your kids, they are trying to enshrine their beliefs in law, they are trying to regulate your sex life. The religious permanently trying to get into your head, your life, your laws, your country.  MH answered your question for what it's worth.  For my part, I am about 40 years an atheist. My kids recently came out of the closet publically as atheists which caught me unawares since I never promoted atheism nor talked much about it. What I did do was promote critical thinking.

Their mother, my ex-wife, on the other hand is so far in the closet that she can see a lion, a witch and a naked bloke with a goats bum called Tumnus.

What are you talking about? Is there a religion that is completely good? I guess Buddhism isn't bad, but most religions I have heard of have some kind of violence or hate worked in somewhere. I don't think there are theistic religions that are ideal.
Besides that, you don't need the motivation of heaven to do a good deed. You should do good deeds because you want to do good for good's sake, not necessarily for a reward. I mean, whatever get's people to help out other's in need is good, but ideally, you should do it with or without possibility of reward.
I do believe that there is no heaven. But that doesn't mean I am not doing good things. My good deeds are just motivated by good for good's sake.

As others have asked, why? What about those of us (like yours truly) who have never had any religious upbringing, yet still have been known to argue about religion?

Are atheists are too egotistical(like theists like to say) to let go of their personal comfort for the idealistic/perfect ideas of theism where everybody strive to get in heaven by doing "good deeds"? Is science is used just to guard personal earthly comfort by saying "It a scam there is no heaven".

You got it now follow up and seek out the truth of God. One truth is this you can not do enough good to get into heaven. A second thing I nor most Christians believes all science is bad, on the contrary we like sciences that help the human race and other things in this world.
