It's music and friendship for me. I'm one of those weirdos who would rather be blind than deaf. If I can talk to beautiful people and hear their beautiful voices and I can hear beautiful music I'm happy. Good music and good conversation... and my life is complete. I'm a rather simple guy though and rather easily pleased lol.

"A society built around the individual, rather than the family, will petrify into unspeakable emptiness.
We are not made to be a collection of individuals running around chasing our own cravings. We are made for family, and for fellowship; for sacrifice and generosity; for love.
Love doesn’t come from that third book you wanted to write, or the award you wanted to win, or the partnership you sought. None of that will come visit you when you are old and lonely, or sick and dying. All the stuff you chased down and hoarded into your little box will turn to dust before your eyes, and you’ll have only the souls you loved and gave your life for." - Jennifer Hardltline
Now I know you are a fraud. You cant fool a former Catholic.
Now I really hate you........ "None of that will come to visit you when you are old, lonely or sick and dying."
Sooooo true!!!!!!!!!
In all seriousness, when I was young, my parents, especially my Mom were obsessed with image. In my Mom's old age that went away. I still understand why she tried what she tried when I was young, it simply didn't work on me because we were different personalities. But since I moved down here to take care of here, she let go of the script thinking and saw me for me.
It is true, "You can't take it with you."
Haha. That quote was actually written by a blogger who is a devout Catholic.
But yeah, so much truth to what she says there!
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I know I'm posting this in the philosophy forum but I'm less interested in the philosophical question of meaning and purpose in life and more interested in what gives your life meaning and purpose and how I can find that for myself, post-cancer.
My life is fairly random. Lots of doctors appointments (spina bifida), but some free time as well. I did work for a number of years, and have volunteered like crazy, but my health these days kind of prohibits both. But, my extended family is on FB, and that's a great thing. Occasionally, I'll find a game I like on FB (last was Pearl's Peril. YMMV). I love social media, with FB and twitter. It is a window into my world of interests and concerns, and I've made friends that way.
But nothing quite takes the place of going out to do whatever it is you like to do. And when your body and your mind either bot fail you, or fail eachother, life is frustrating. But when everything is good on those fronts, you've got to just go for it. Last two nigts, I was at women's college lacrosse games. That's not the top sport I follow, but I'm open to new or occasional experiences like that. At least those things that I think I have a reason to like (also a fan of women's soccer, as we've chatted about on here, and of women's gymnastics).
I've also become a ballet fan. Been to a couple Nutcrackers and a couple other performances, and hopefully can go to Giselle on the weekend (that's something that was on my FB feed. Gotta evaluate possible opportunities that you like and go for it).
Definitely some A69-type stuff as well (maybe that's another thread).
Gosh, I'm too girl-obsessed.
And movies! In the theater!

I think you are on the right track, because you are able to look at your feelings objectively.
Sometimes that is more important than good feelings, it allows you to stand back and decide what to do.
You have experienced a big life shock, which people generally avoid by distracting themselves until they are cornered by a life threatening event.
And it can leave you feeling powerless, and that's when the future looks bleak, because you want to have some say in how things work out.
You don't want to be totally vulnerable and you deserve a much better outlook.
You are an incredibly brave person.
SDA's have had the knowledge on how to beat cancer, for over a century, even though the majority are somewhat ignorant of it, they still enjoy an average of 25 years longer life than average, and that's just by doing the very least in health reform. Not to mention a life free of disease and illness.
It has a lot to do with prevention. This is where people are turned off, because they are afraid of missing out on their garbage diet. But the food on the new diet has more color, variety and tastes, and it encompasses the best dishes of every culture.
An old fashioned book called "Back to Eden" by Jethro Kloss is a rare but comprehensive book. Jethro was a doctor some 100 years ago. He lays out what to do to cure cancer, and by reading the book you'll also become aware of a whole world of knowledge about health.
He did not have the benefits of some modern medicines, but the principles of health apply in any age. Read the introduction carefully to find out where he got his information from, and follow that lead as well.
I don't know your predicament, but you will soon have a pretty good idea of how well your body can recover, after 3 months of the new life style. You have lots of learning to do, and some exciting changes in the future.

I always feel the most purpose in life when I am of service to others.
Whether it's small stuff like helping my older neighbors with their computer stuff or helping a Swedish kid with maths, or bigger stuff like volunteering with the Golden Retriever Rescue and fostering dogs, I meet great people and I feel connected and I am at my happiest.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

We are social beasts.
Don't shut yourself away in your work, in your crafts, in your cats.
These are also things you enjoy doing and things you should do. But don't restrict yourself to them.
You have friends and family, keep them close. You may feel like a burden to them, but you won't be.

First off you should be happy you have survived to think on the matter . But the fact remains you won't find easily . Its not something someone else can simply tell you .It's unfortunately something you may need to wander for . I don't believe for a second one thing can define your life .It certainly has not defined mine . Don't fear the search or the journey . Fear becoming afraid to journey .

I do think that life has an inherent purpose. I find my own purpose, specific and more compelling than any general sense of purpose, in doing what i can nearest me to further that, to exemplify it and fulfill my potential. It took me awhile, but I found something I'd do for free..something I'd pay other people to let me do. Something that fulfills all of my smaller and more immediate goals but can never be done..or finished. Something that provides peace of mind in a list of neverending tasks. The slow burn of constant work and delayed satisfaction that consumes my rambling thoughts. Zen in blue and green, I suppose, lol.
I doubt it would work for everyone, though I think everyone's qol could be improved by dabbling a bit.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

How nice to see you here ...I missed you a little bit!😊...and good to hear you feel better and and you try to get on your own feet and, above all you are looking for a purpose in your life...it's a good start...I agree that we're partly like those beasts that only seek to survive!... That we're social creatures but above all, we're human being, thinking creatures with great imagination and dreams...with some needs...and it's good to called them, then probably we'll know what is a purpose of our life. But since we're social creatures we need other people around...and somehow it's also our purpose of life...make others happy which also makes us happy...of course, you can't forget about yourself in all of this😉
So don't isolate yourself from the world and people ... even if you think that you could be a burden because you aren't and you will never be!! You are an amazing woman with a big heart and I'm sure you have a big dreams, so your life seems to have a beautiful and bright future...what I wish you with all my heart ... you are my ray of sunshine!!

“I may be on the side of the angels but don’t think for one second that I am one of them.”
“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery each day."
