Rural New England, which is lily white and full of agriculture and farms, is magically not falling to pieces because nobody wants to do the work.

The people lobbying for illegal labor, which drives down wages, are the same people lobbying for $15 minimum wage.

I know in our area, construction companies and landscaping companies that hire legally get outbid because they have to pay their workers in a legal manner. It's become like sports, where if you're not using steroids, you're probably not going to win.

Wages rise on California farms. Americans still don’t want the job

Trump’s immigration crackdown is supposed to help U.S. citizens. For California farmers, it’s worsening a desperate labor shortage.

Today, farmworkers in the state earn about $30,000 a year if they work full time — about half the overall average pay in California. Most work fewer hours.

Some farmers are even giving laborers benefits normally reserved for white-collar professionals, like 401(k) plans, health insurance, subsidized housing and profit-sharing bonuses. Full-timers at Silverado Farming, for example, get most of those sweeteners, plus 10 paid vacation days, eight paid holidays, and can earn their hourly rate to take English classes.

But the raises and new perks have not tempted native-born Americans to leave their day jobs for the fields. Nine in 10 agriculture workers in California are still foreign born, and more than half are undocumented, according to a federal survey.

And as far as New England goes..... perhaps you should pay more attention?

A pregnant Mexican woman still in knee-high rubber boots is visited by Nancy Sabin, a volunteer who finds dairy farm jobs for Hispanic workers. On this afternoon, she brings thrift-shop baby clothes.
"If it wasn't for the Hispanics," Sabin says, "there would be no family farms. There would be no farms, period."
This is the open secret behind the black-and-white Holsteins, rolling hills and postcard images: Unable to attract local workers for the grueling job of milking cows and working the farm, Vermont, the nation's 14th-largest dairy state, props up its dairy industry with perhaps thousands of immigrant laborers, many of whom are in the U.S. illegally.

In fact, the only person in the country who doesn't seem to understand the problem is the fucking WLB himself.

A while back, I read a book called What’s the matter with Kansas? and it was all about how the Republican Party convinces poor people like this to vote for politicians whose policies are diametrically opposed to their own well-being by appealing to their “salt of the Earth” sensibilities. That was published in 04. It evidently took 14 more years for them to figure it out.
