(June 17, 2018 at 1:26 am)*Deidre* Wrote: Girl on a Train...again. I totally didn't get it the first time, maybe I was distracted. This time, it all clicked, and made for a pretty good film. Dark and depressing, but good. Well acted. I like Emily Blunt.
I liked the book way better than the movie but that's the way it goes. What I appreciate about both though is that the main character is intensely flawed in a way that you don't often see in fiction. Her alcoholism wasn't just a superficial character trait, it was integral to the story and exposed in away that it was very easy for me to be sympathetic to her and her situation.

During the previous three days I spent time watching "Bladerunner: 2049".* I managed 10-15 minutes at a time before finding an urgent mission in the kitchen (load the dishwasher, etc.) and turning it off for a while.
I'd like that time back, please.
*First time ever watching it from beginning to end with no skipping ahead or just giving up.

In Bruges. Gripping, well written, well acted...then a stupidly contrived ending damn near killed it.
Overall: 7/10
Chopping Off The Last Five Minutes: 9/10

Incredibles 2
Cute, fun, not quite as clever as the first one and you definitely get some of the bigger laughs in the trailer but I'd recommend it if you're into the animated Pixar movies.

I just watched Trust. It's a movie about a family torn apart after an online predator targets the oldest daughter. It's set in Wilmette, a good ten minutes from me, and one thing that's really strange: Clive Owen plays the father, and he doesn't bother to do an American accent. As a Chicagoan Anglophile, I don't know whether or not that's a good thing (because he's not faking an American accent and his natural RP-ified Brummie accent shine through) or a bad thing (because he's not even bothering to sound like he's from Chicago).
My being a big fan of The Knick is making this question all the more twisted: If he actually tried to do an American accent (especially since his accent there is a lot better than his other attempts), would it make me wonder what Thack was doing on the Modern-Day North Shore, especially given that he was last seen dying while trying to perform intestinal surgery on himself (and ultimately failing) sometime around 1901? Would I at least ask why he lost that trademark 'stache?

The new Blade Runner. I liked it, but up to a certain point I was wondering why some of the stuff was happening. It seemed unnecessarily violent, particularly the abuse of a certain hot replicant.
