Cool... I certainly like tea more than coffee but never heard of Chai tea. But generally I'm not really one for hot drinks... even hot chocolate... which I guess that thing can make as well? Though I'd have them occasionally.

I'm a big fan of chai. Chai lattes are definitely part of my "unecessary spending" money I budget every month. They're good iced as well but I definitely prefer hot.

I knew of it for a while, but my girlfriend (who is of Indian decent, the place chai originates) made me some that was So delicious, it got me hooked.

But I agree with the sentiment... not only are these sorts of pre-packaged meals/drinks expensive, they're also a waste of packaging materials that often can't be recycled. Like having an unrecyclable plastic tub for chewing gum or sometimes even metal boxes for sweets... just seemingly endless packaging thrown away for the sake of quickly used consumables.

Mind you I guess maybe another factor is some people are more willing to eat or drink out... in coffee shops and the like... so if you're used to paying for individual cups of coffee, I guess it's not much of a culture shock to buy them singly in the form of a single use K-Cup/pod.

So, the single use ones are made out of a cheap plastic. The reusable ones are made from a sturdier plastic and steel mesh.

As for cost, I find the single use cups to be expensive although you are sacrificing cost for efficiency. They are great for those who do not desire to make a whole pot of coffee. Or for those who do and end up throwing most of it out. So for those people, the cost is worth it. They generally make between a 6 and 10 ounce cup of coffee and that's it. Using it again results in a weak cup of coffee.

Another plus to consider is that you can often find boxes that contain variety cups. This allows one to change up their coffee instead of having to drink the same flavor every day. The downside to this is that you get what you pay for.

Most cups come in boxes of 48 or larger. I've seen boxes of 72 cups cost upwards of $80.00 or more, depending on the brand. That's only 72 cups of coffee. Some might think that's worth the cost, but if I can buy a 33.4 ounce canister of Folgers, it will yield 270 cups of coffee at 6oz. per cup. It will cost me around $11.00 for that canister, making my way more cost effective. Pair that with the reusable cups and I'm quite the frugal person.

The little disposable k-cups run from ~ $.50 to $.70 each, depending on manufacturer and flavor. The cup that can be used to put one's own coffee grounds in comes with the machine. It's a pulsing hemorrhoid to clean and an incredible waste of water for people like me who live in the (irrigated) California desert. You have to be careful with the supply tank, too. Years ago, I had been feeling like crap for weeks, and then I noticed that black mold was growing in that tank.   I never used it again. It still sits on the counter, because the wife can't bring herself to throw anything out, and if I do, I catch hell for it. We are renting a storage facility for my mother in law's possessions after we moved her in with us. I'm thinking that I'll put it in storage, from which it will "mysteriously" disappear. :nods:

Ah right I see... so you've got one of the machines but only use the reusable cups because it's (much) cheaper? I think I would as well if I had one... I'm also a frugal person. $80 for 72 vs $11 for 270 is quite a difference! So if I drunk coffee no way would I even consider the single use ones, except perhaps possibly very occasionally as a treat, if there was a detectable difference in quality. But since I don't drink coffee it's all rather moot But I do like the smell of coffee, and the various coffee concoctions in coffee shops... such as with cream and dusted with chocolate... do look delicious but I have to remind myself that at the end of the day, under all that, is... coffee

I'm going to have to try in now since there's three people recommending it Tea wise I only know normal tea, peppermint tea, and chamomile, the latter two of which I can do without anyway, but are (arguably) useful if you're feeling ill.

Something to consider with peppermint tea: add a small amount of ground ginger to it when you are queasy or have an upset stomach. Works wonders.

Good grief! They are not hard to clean. It's one of my "End of Month" checklist items. Google "Keurig clean reservoir".
