Does positive masculinity exist? Men correct the woman.

I certainly meet and fulfill many (not all) of the masculine roles that my society has given me. Bread winner, cars, home maintenance, driving, opening doors, carrying the heavy stuff, picking up the check, defense from threats, grilling, killing spiders, putting down the pets, .....................

Some of you will say, yeah, but a woman can do all that stuff also. Fair enough. But understand this, my wife chooses not to perform any of these tasks. It's her expectation that these duties are required from me in the relationship, and I have no problem with that. She also has a list of tasks that she considers her feminine responsibility even though I could complete most of them also.

I guess my point is that in a relationship, each partner will need to define the role(s) of the participants, be they masculine, feminine or neutral.

I shouldn't have deleted my OP or changed the title. Sorry about that. I appreciate the level headed reply.

I do believe it exists, and I tried to give examples.  Loyalty, bravery, protectiveness, and providing were some on my list.  I suggested Samwise Gamgee as a good pop culture role model, a man who was down to earth, loyal to friends, emotionally open and kind, but also fierce and brave.

Thank you for your examples, I think they are good ones.  There are still many gender related behaviors that we socially accept as normal, and there isn't really anything wrong with people fulfilling these roles as long as they are happy to do so.

The point of my post had very little to do with if a woman or man can perform certain tasks or if they can have certain qualities.  I just wanted to discuss what good qualities we might teach young men today in place of negative ones our culture sometimes emphasises.

We already teach that one. Thats actually one of the things I wish we didn't - but I have seriously situation specific reasons for that. Theres a reason your food system is all fucked up. All the smart kids got out of their parents basement and went to college. The whole affair is being officiated by Cletus.

All of those traits we wish to develop in our sons, improve within ourselves, and seek out in friends.  Those traits that build a positive self image, and foster productive and fulfilling relationships with those around us.  Effectively, the man we want to be, or to be with.

An itemized list would be expansive, and share vast overlap with positive femininity...though it's conceivable that a few items would make one list and not the other, or feature more prominently in one than the other.  It could even be the case that items on that list would be poor attributes to develop in females, or outside of the context of their utility, broadly and roundly condemned.

For example, I'd add a measured impulse to violence and it's consequences to my list.  Everybody needs a friend with a shovel and a bag of lime in the trunk.

Where can I buy some lime? Asking for a friend.

If you really want to bypass a paper trail...you can find it a few feet under the sediment anywhere salt water has ever been.

Less so in freshwater creek beds, depending on the prevalence of snails.

The q is sort of like "Where can I find large amounts of black powder - asking for a friend". Well..you can grow it, if you want.

Obviously a few things above present themselves to be added to the list of positive masculinity..as I'd compile it.

Teach your young men to always go inside the fence and bust up an old chifferobe when asked.

-as an addendum to the above.....you can make it, with enough heat and shells and/or bone. Quicklime ftw! Can you see how the problem creates it's own solution? Wink

Here's what positive masculinity looks like:

It was just a tongue-in-cheek joke, really. If I wanted to disappear someone, I'd turn them into kibble for my little dogs. "Here, Phydeaux, more lovely long pork!" That's most of the meat and quite a bit of the bone.

...and I have made my own black powder. When I was a teen, my dad destroyed my 3" X 5" card stack that had notes and so forth, of things that now appear in "The Anarchist's Cookbook" online. I had to do my research the hard way. I was reading books from the bookmobile that were above the red tape line that were only supposed to be for adults when I was 11, and could request books. I don't remember if I've ever told the story about how one of my friends and I manufactured our own sulfuric acid, and he got burned by it. I was png in that household for awhile! WTH!? it was HIS chemistry set, that his parents bought for him!
