The Newly Departed thread: announcements (departures)

I have to agree with you but I don't think this was your fault. You engaged the way anyone else looking to discuss a topic, engaged. You weren't being responded to. I would have been a bit pissed myself if I had spent all that time watching videos on a subject only to feel like I was being ignored after getting involved in a particular thread. I read the last few pages of the thread where it started falling apart and I sensed there was more going on with Rob than this being a thread he wanted to get a discussion out of. While I personally wasn't interested in the subject, I at least thought that there would be more engagement from Rob with other people posting. What i saw was just out of character for Rob. That's sad.

Anyway, I hope he finds himself during this time. He really can contribute nicely to this place. It would be a shame if he quit over this.

Yeah I checked in with her recently on Fb.  Do you use that at all?  I see Tibbers there but not you.

Anyhow I explained to her how I'd taken a bit of break just because the interactions were starting to feel repetitious.  She said that was her feeling too.  Of course I no sooner told her that than I just had a busy day on the site today.  Go figure.  She may just want a break too but seems pretty done here.  But I like her so I'm glad I know a catholic lady who can help me understand things from another POV.  It seems you and Tibs have had a good relationship with her too.  Do you keep in touch?

It used to be...
During the past year (maybe a bit more), I've noticed this place becoming more hostile towards theists.
Some people tend to be respectful, like whateverist and Tiberius.... Some people are engaging, like khem or jorm...
But some people are just nasty, like kit and tizheruk.

Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinions, as long as they follow the rules... But the vocal nasties make those same theists feel unwelcome. And that is something that didn't seem to happen when Rayaan was admin.
There was more respect, back then.
I've even noticed my own motivation for posting on religious threads dropping, as I don't care to engage when others are just insulting people. Why should I bother to write something, if I expect the religious to feel insulted and just leave, never to read my words?

It's been a sad realization about this place...
But you guys do you.
Those of us who are more interested in the actual exchange of ideas and in understanding each other will, in time, find some other place... Or some niche within this one... Time will tell how things turn out.

I wanted to jump in and give a quick update:

Clearly, having a break from the forum just based on what happened recently was a gross overreaction. It’s clear now that I needed a break anyway (for reasons I won’t go into) but was clinging on because I enjoy the company of so many of the people here. This just finally pushed me into doing so.

I will continue to check my PMs if anyone wants to contact me. I hope everyone is well. I will miss you. I’m alright, but my mental health is always frail and I have to do what is right to look after myself.
Feel free to send me a private message.

Many have tried to engage in meaningful ways but I think they just give up because when theists come here, many don't do so with any other intention but to try and convert or preach and as an atheist, this is one of the few places that we can come to where we should be able to express our views without all the bs.

It's fine for others to believe what they want. It's fine for them to express those views here. That isn't the problem. The problem starts when they realize they aren't going to get the conversions they hoped for and they start telling us what we need. I'm tired of it. Let's debate, but when I'm not convinced that your religion is for me, kindly keep your preaching to yourself. That's all I ask.

Can you ascertain such a thing on the very first page of a thread?
e.g:
DNA Proves Existence of a Designer

That thread is special. The OP was claiming nearly from the get go that he was right and that the "debate" was over. One only needs to read a few pages into that mess to see how the rest of it was going to go.

"few pages"... and yet, we got crap right on page 1.
That is a symptom of how things are around here, now.... and I speak of one of the threads I know... I'm sure it happens in many others.
