Mesa officers rarely disciplined in excessive-force investigations, police data show

However, an analysis by The Arizona Republic finds it is rare for Mesa officers to face any discipline in excessive-force investigations. 
Mesa has shelled out more than $1 million to settle legal claims that officers used excessive force in the past four years, but only 2 percent of 158 internal-affairs investigations into such allegations were substantiated since 2014.
Some Mesa leaders are demanding that officers be held more accountable.

“The community as a whole: white, black, Hispanic, believers, non-believers, everyone is tired of harsh policing,” said Andre Miller, a pastor with Mesa's New Beginnings Christian Church. “It’s affected every economic group. It’s affected every race in this city."
Mesa Police Chief Ramon Batista already has revised policy to prevent officers from striking people’s faces or heads unless a suspect is being combative. He also has sought to make it easier for the public to raise concerns over potential harsh treatment and improve the review process when claims surface.

The problem, chiefy, is when your thug cop says that a man who was just standing there was "being combative" you accept it at face value.  Go fuck yourself.

The Staten Island cop accused of using a banned chokehold on Eric Garner will soon have his day in court.

More than four years after his involvement in one of the most sensational incidents in city history, Officer Daniel Pantaleo is set to appear at a departmental trial to fight the charge that he used a chokehold on Eric Garner, whose death after repeatedly gasping “I can’t breathe” was captured on video and sparked worldwide outrage.

Pantaleo will be in the NYPD trial room at One Police Plaza on Dec. 6 — but his appearance will likely be short, with his lawyer and a prosecutor discussing evidentiary issues and other matters by a department trials commissioner, sources said.

Pantaleo’s actual trial, which could cost him his job, will almost certainly not start until early next year.

A Georgia nightmare: This woman was jailed for 4 months for possessing cotton candy

A Georgia woman has filed a federal lawsuit after she spent nearly four months in jail because a roadside drug test administered by untrained police officers falsely identified a bag of cotton candy as methamphetamine.

Monroe County resident Dasha Fincher filed the lawsuit last week against Monroe County, the two deputies who arrested her, and the company that makes the drug test. The lawsuit argues that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was reckless and negligent and violated her civil rights.

According to the lawsuit, the car Fincher was riding in was pulled over on New Year’s Eve 2016 because of a dark window tint, the deputies said, even though they later admitted the windows were legal. Deputies Cody Maples and Allen Henderson spotted a large open plastic bag inside the vehicle, and Fincher explained that it was cotton candy.

Black Man Killed by Officer in Alabama Mall Shooting Was Not the Gunman, Police Now Say

An Alabama police officer fatally shot a 21-year-old black man on Thursday night who the police said shot at least one person at a mall near Birmingham, turning a Thanksgiving holiday shopping scene into chaos.

But on Friday the police said evidence suggests that the man actually was not the gunman and that the true gunman remained at large.

“We regret that our initial media release was not totally accurate, but new evidence indicates that it was not,” the police said, adding that the conclusion was based on interviews with witnesses and “critical evidentiary items.”

But the police went on to say "at least we got one nigger and there's still another one out there we can gun down.  Close enough for police work!"
