There’s no guarantee values will increase: When Congress was about to enact the 1994-2004 ban on manufacture of assault weapons like the AR-15 for civilian use, demand spiked, pushing the price up by hundreds of dollars, according to the Huffington Post.
However, price spikes don’t last, as seen in a study that evaluated a two-year period after the ban was originally enacted (weapons already in existence were grandfathered in). According to the National Institute of Justice:

The research shows that the ban triggered speculative price increases and ramped-up production of the banned firearms prior to the law’s implementation, followed by a substantial postban drop in prices to levels of previous years.

This isn’t surprising. When something is relatively simple to make, like guns, supply will ultimately meet demand. If Congress ever outlaws AR-15-style rifles, like the one used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, reduced supply will lead to higher prices if existing weapons are grandfathered in and allowed to remain in circulation. But if Congress does not outlaw such weapons, supply will catch up with demand, making price spikes temporary.

It's the grandfathering that increases the price, not the ban..and even then, it normalizes. The whole thing is an aside, though, since the guns used in the commission of crimes are not high value guns, or guns which retain their value well. Criminals are broke. They use cheap guns rarely (if ever) focused on - and that's a big part of why our gun control measures keep failing.

It would be like trying to fix polio by noting that kids get polio, and kids commonly have dogs, so lets ban dogs. Well..you know, we were on to something there, so close, but we lost it halfway through and did the dumb thing. Start with revolvers, 38s. Then move on to semi auto 22. Hoover up a few 357s while we're at it. By the point that criminals are back to trying to sneak rifles and shotguns into the convenience store we'll be well on our way to dealing with gun crime, lol.

And you know that the ones that are legally owned will increase in value if they are banned. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to get that. You're not paranoid until you start burying your gold. I know a few guys who are studying up on how to bury their guns. Those guys are paranoid.

You don't know the paranoiacal people I know. My cousins have a "Big Fifty" club. That's the fifty relatives with the most guns. The total just went over 2,000 guns. And that's fifty out of 1,800 that I know of.

When the Soviets left Lithuania on March of 1990, Lithuanians turned up in the streets brandishing WWII vintage rifles and machine guns - despite 50 years of being banned by the Soviets - with SERIOUS penalties for non- compliance.
