@ Tiberius or @ SteelCurtain
I've noticed that a couple of members are still able to use N**GER in it's full glory without apparent repercussion.
Just to be clear.....Am I permitted to do this as well, so long as am I "discussing" the word N***GER?
Let me know, please.
Thanks!

Make no mistake, N**GER is the ultimate verbal expression of anti-black hostility and white superiority, and has been for centuries. Blacks mirrored that hostility and perpetuated the use in a vicious cycle of internalized racism and self-loathing, and some continue to do so today. That's a far cry from making it harmless or "okay".
It's a slur, nonetheless.
Now...if folks don't give fuck and feel that having a little N***GER fun it is more important than N**GERS and their N**GER feelings, or than having a forum atmosphere that is reasonably welcoming, so be it.
If you want to send the message that this is you guys' space, and feel you should be free to toss around slurs that are designed to denigrate certain humans as "lesser" and "other" based on phenotype in order to remind folks of that whenever you see fit, then that's fine as well.
Just don't expect that those who oppose those stances are somehow obligated to ignore it or make you feel good about.

This is our stance

In the case of this forum, the slur (and others with the same history) won't be allowed unless in a discussion about the words themselves, and even then in moderation. We won't be gatekeeping who can say it and who can't. The rules apply equally to everyone.
I'm saying IRL in the above post.

@ Jörmungandr My position isn't that we just go with his gut instinct. My position is that I'm white, and therefore, I will not say whether or not the word is offensive even if used in a joking manner in this context. It is entirely up to him, and other black people, how they choose to feel about it. I'll respect those feelings. Again, I don't think for a second you meant it offensively or that you are racist. I just don't think that's true. However, you took a risk and it backfired. It's not really that big a deal.

You people in slack have surely known each other long enough to call each other friends.
When your friend says something inappropriate you just tell them sternly not to do it.
You don't silently walk them from the room without explanation and close the door in their face.

I learned from this thread that the OP is an Asian person who (according to her own account) has had mental health issues. I hadn't known that before.
If someone were to call her a "nutcase Ch*nk," or some other slur which many people find offensive, I wonder how it would be taken. Would we have arguments that if she took offense it was her own problem? If she did take offense (which she might not -- I don't know) would she be correct in demanding the language's removal from the forum?

I feel like all slurs (that autocorrected to sluts, what’s have I been typing about? 😳), are covered by the prime directive. Nutcase...I don’t know. It’d be pretty fucking rude for someone to call her a nutcase based just on that she’s had mental health issues. But, for example, if she said the earth was flat, I wouldn’t be bothered by someone calling her a nutcase. She might be bothered by it, and she’d be within her rights to be bothered by it. But nutcase isn’t the same as a slur and I don’t think it is nor should be covered by the PD

Yeah, I guess there are some words kind of in the gray area. It would be rude in a lot of cases.
On the other hand, I think people who enjoy watching golf on TV are crazy, so I might use it in that instance.
So maybe the debate is whether the N-word, when used by non-black people, is ever in the gray area.

I want to point out that, from what I've read, Jorm's offense wasn't nearly the same as her calling someone a racist slur. She mistakenly used it trying to crack a joke. Not the same as someone calling her an Asian slur or a nutcase.
