Bob Hawke Dead At 89

For those who don't know, Hawke was Prime Minister of Australia (Labour) from 1983-1991.

Everything you know about Australia's economy - pensions schemes, universal health care, trade unionism, Family Assistance - is pretty much directly attributable to Hawke.  A true giant of social democracy.

It appears that you don't have to be anybody particularly newsworthy to die these days. How disappointing. Coffee

RE: RIP thread
Yeah it's the fake news and failing New York Times that don't cover this. Max was much more important than the Pope. I couldn't care less if Pope died since he is just an asshole who will eventually be replaced with another asshole, but Max Wright was unique.

You know that made me think how people could rely on TV to be transformed into this alternative world of sitcoms. I mean when you look at that tool shed in Alf it was the place where magic happened. Tanners had like hundreds of thousands dollars worth equipment there: radios, computers, musical instruments and whatnot. That's magic.

I also long for the good old days when only universally famous people had the good taste to die.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
