The Tor browser

I'd rather hide in plain sight.

That's pretty easy to do with http://trackmenot.io/ extension.

SenseMaker007 Wrote:You even admitted yourself that using it puts you on a list "unless you set it up properly." Well, not everyone is an IT buff that can set it up properly.
Things being often misused doesn't automatically make them bad. Antibiotics are often misused, yet they still do more good than harm. For some things, like the weapons, it's questionable whether they do more good than harm, but I don't see why it would be questionable for the Tor browser.
SenseMaker007 Wrote:Another thing is that it's a slippery slope once you are able to access the dark web. Once you think it's okay to access one part of it then what holds you back from the rest and what stops you from bumping into something truly fucking awful?
Well, you know, I don't think Tor is especially useful for things like child pornography, since the download speed you can get by using Tor from Croatia is steadily around 300kbps (the usual download speed you can get by plainly using CarNet ISP is, in my experience, 1mbps, and the usual download speed you can get by plainly using CrisisConnection ISP is, in my experience, 3mbps). Trying to stream or download large files over Tor is just plain stupid, because it's not only slow, but it can also lead you to be detected.
dyresand Wrote:If you use a good VPN service that has no logs then no they cannot tell what you are doing.
Well, again, they can see you are using a VPN, and they can see which VPN you are using. Using VPN might make you suspicious.
dyresand Wrote:Linux is better because it is more secure of an operating system than windows.
Well, I am using Oracle Linux. I am using it primarily because it's so much faster than Windows 10.
dyresand Wrote:You can do more in terms of security with the Bash terminal than with PowerShell.
Arguably not, see this.
dyresand Wrote:1.1.1.1 is a good example of a secure DNS server rather than using the ISP DNS they would assign to you.
In my experience, it's not a good idea. First of all, unless you are using DNS over TLS (which makes many older programs stop working), the ISP can still easily intercept your requests.
Second, 1.1.1.1 (the CloudFlare DNS) has a high latency. If I try to connect to it, it tries to connect me to some server in Vienna (apparently, that's their closest DNS server to Osijek), and it usually takes more than a second just to PING it, and it often even times out.
And I agree that the DNS servers assigned by ISPs tend to be terrible. That's why I am using the ZRAK DNS in Zagreb, 195.29.12.77. The latency is more than twice as low as it is for 1.1.1.1, and the foreign websites still resolve.
If you are willing to sacrifice speed for privacy, why not simply use Tor? Then the DNS requests are actually sent by the exit node, not by you.

How is that better than using DuckDuckGo, or some other search-engine that has a good record of not revealing their user data, like Bing?

It messes with tracking cookies.

Well, cookies can be rather useful. It makes it possible for a search engine to give you links that are actually relevant. Try finding information about some event that happened in Osijek (or whichever town you live in) while blocking the cookies. It's hard, isn't it? The search engines will give you some, for example, Romanian pages with words spelt similar to the Croatian words you typed in, completely irrelevant to what you are trying to find.

Never said it does ... just saying that I don't see how it's worth the risks in any way.

And yet, the dark web is still the favorite place for the pedophiles to hang out . . .

Do you have some evidence for that? The fact the dark web is like ten times slower than clear web strongly suggests there isn't much pornography on it. OK, maybe the pedophiles are using it for something else (some sort of chatting), but you still need some evidence to assert that.

Those guys don't mind a download bar, right.

I think I'd try to convince the authorities that I was dling pron with tor rather than cop to posting the sorts of things I do on these boards..if I lived in the middle east, for example.

You want evidence for the fact that the dark web is where the cybercriminals hang out?
