Technology, Good or Bad Overall?
#11
RE: Technology, Good or Bad Overall?
I think that tech can’t be called anything other than a net good. If it killed us tomorrow we’d still be tens if thousands of years in it’s debt.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Of course not. That's what chamber pots are for.

Just exactly how thick are you?

Yeah. I'm using technology to raise a hypothetical question about the net benefits of technology. What's your point again angry internet user?
Did you just reply to me on the internet, or by homing pigeon?

You have demonstrated the answer to your question simply by replying.

Not even close as far as I'm concerned.

Technology gives us the power to direct our own evolution. Unlike every other animal on this planet, we have the power to improve ourselves through technology. We can increase our own intelligence and physical powers. Theoretically, we can become god-like.

Other animals cannot do that. They are at the mercy of the food chain.

Easy answer for me.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I approve of technology for the following reasons (not an exhaustive list):

1.  I like living indoors.

2. 'Blackadder'

3.  A pronounced lack of cholera cases in my neighbourhood.

4.  Books keep getting cheaper.

5.  I'm too old to run down an antelope.

6.  Central heating.

7.  The internet allows me to appear smarter than I actually am.

8.  Better ways to get around than shank's mares.

9.  Light bulbs.

10.  I don't have to go to Thailand to get Thai food.

Can't imagine giving up the benefits of technology.

If we define technology as tool making, then there seems to be increasing consensus amongst anthropologists that technology didn't start with homo sapien, home erectus, or even the Australopithecus. In fact the first tool fabrication probably occurred well before our last common ancestor with the chimpanzee, because chimpanzee spontaneously fabricate tools, and has been shown to be able to learn to make stone tools.

So truly giving up technology means we must regress to a point where we must call the chimpanzees "too advanced".

Again guys, technology is as only as good as the ethics of the people that invent it and use it. Technology also was used by Hitler and Stalin to do what they did. And even today, fossil fuel CEOs lie about the damage their products do. Nadar took on the auto industry in the 70s to face them with their bad products.

I am glad I don't have to shit in an outhouse. I am glad I didn't have to sail on boat for months to get to Australia. But even our modern technology has a downside. That same technology has allowed humans to produce throw away crap that ends up in landfills and in our oceans. It allows our species to produce pollution faster than the planet can naturally absorb it.

Our species is very capable of inventing and problem solving. But at the same time, we are also full of greed and lust for power. It is still up to humans how technology is used. That is why I say technology is neither good or bad, but humans are good and bad and both good and bad people use the same technology.
