Real Men

Granted, I don't actually think that a man being homosexual makes him less masculine, but it flies in the face of the stereotypes that narrow-minded people like that have about manliness.

I think being a man has to do with taking care of your responsibilities, pursuing the things in your life that you find to be worthwhile, and providing for the people around you that you love, in whatever way you're capable of.

Being a man is not:

-Fixing cars and getting grease on your hands and face
-Welding
-Roofing
-Doing construction
-Working in a greasy, dirty factory
-Chopping down trees
-Heavy drinking
-Bar fights
-Fast muscle cars
-Seducing voluptuous blonde women
-Smoking a cigarette with a stern look on your face
-Riding a Harley

...so on and so forth. All of that shit is nonsense. If those things are things one actually likes or does... well.. it's your life, not mine. I don't care. But none of those things have to do with masculinity, unless it's your job to work in that greasy, dirty factory so you can put food on the table for your woman, or man, and your kid. Exceptions exist, of course. But you get the gist.

We're all some combination of masculine and feminine. And that's fine. I'd probably be considered a masculine guy. However, I also do a bunch of feminine things. We're just humans.

I think people get too hung up on this stuff.

I must not be a Man because that list pretty much sums up my early 20's, lol.

RE: Real Men
Real Men was one of my favorite comedy movies when I was a kid

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

He sets the bar pretty low.

It seems a hero must perform a heroic act to be given the title.

I am unaware of anything heroic done by President Obama. I like the guy - voted for him - and for the most part thought he did a better than average job as president.

But he's not heroic.

Save a baby from a burning building at risk of your life - THEN you get the title....

That's fine if you did those things. Once again, it's your life, not mine. But those things I listed have nothing to do with masculinity.
If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth.

I once knew a widowed mum with three children. She worked three jobs to keep the kids from being hungry and homeless rather than resort to public assistance. That’s always struck me as pretty heroic.

I would think a "real man" is one that really exists!  Smile

Whether a real man exists becomes becomes immaterial if how you know him is by attributes he mostly didn’t possess.

I'm not sure i agree . I think that's condemnation of our society rather than praise of her actions .

Not sure why it must be “rather”

Also, if there is nothing to condemn in our society, then there would be less room for heroism in it.
