BR provided a much more extensive service, had much better punctuality, higher passenger numbers and customer satisfaction, was the world's leader in rail electification and train innovation and manufacture. And all this on half the subsidy in real terms than is currently being paid to the franchisees alone today.

If BR timetables bore any resemblance to reality it was purely coincidental.
The trains are usually reliable these days unless Network Rail has decided to do something, but they're still nationalized so you can't expect much from them.
