I suppose they could shaft their higher paid workers, and hope to be able to compete with other employers while shafting them - but here again I see bad at business.
Self checkout lines aren't automation. They're just getting you, a real human being, to do hourly work for free. Still waiting to see the prices for groceries come down.... My appologies. I.guess I misunderstood your stance on the subject.
I refuse to use "self check out" - unless the store is willing to pay me an hourly for hassling with it.
So far no takers.

Not that I encourage it, but it's an easy way to steal, simply by scanning a lower value item and bagging the more expensive item. My son works in retail, and that's what's happening. When there are 4 self serve check stands and it's busy, no way that the one employee can verify that the goods are being properly paid for. People make off with thousands of dollars in merchandise every week, just at his store.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

I know a girl (presently doing time) who bragged that the best way to rip off a store is to get a job and work there for a while to find the weak spots in their security.....
I guess it worked.
She' s doing time for check fraud...

It's know colloquially as 'the banana trick' - you scan your bananas 12 times and bag 12 rib steaks. It got the name a couple of years ago when Sainsbury's discovered that in one day they sold twice as many bananas as they had in stock.
Here's the old school version of the same thing. Takes balls and luck to make this one work:

Let's face it: Right now you all wish Elizabeth Warren were in charge.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

She was probably the most qualified and prepared candidate. I'd be willing to bet that actually hurt her candidacy.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Fair point. If the last few years have demonstrated anything at all, it’s that competence is an absolute drawback in the political world.

She will have much more influence as senate majority leader anyway.
