It is a disqualification. But I thought about something to declare the winner in this debate: does plasma have a gravitational pull?
If it is matter, it must have gravity. I frankly don't know the answer to that, and I seriously doubt that it's even discovered. Searched but No google results at my side.

Are you saying that you don't know whether or not the sun exerts a gravitational pull?

What keeps us in orbit around the sun? The sun is made of plasma. The sun exerts a gravitational pull on the Earth. Therefore the sun has mass. Therefore plasma has mass.

Anything that has mass and occupies volume is matter.

From Wikipedia:  Plasmas are by far the most common phase of ordinary matter in the universe, both by mass and by volume.  (has mass and volume, is matter)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_(physics)

And another source discussing the mass of plasma:

https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/214202/what-is-the-effective-electron-mass-in-a-plasma   (again, matter)

Also, when matter moves from a gas to plasma, it requires energy and when it returns to a gas it releases energy.  This conforms to the law of Thermodynamics, conservation of energy.  Plasma is just matter, no doubt about it; it's just at a higher energy state, ionized gas.  Read a physics book!  This is covered in Physics 1 in high school.

Yeah, but that's just science. Winter's already said he's going to believe what he likes, whatever science has to say about it.

In psychological terminology this is known as the Neener-Neener-I-Can't-Hear-You Syndrome, and is generally accompanied by the patient squinching his eyes shut and sticking his fingers in his ears.

I'm not so sure I believe in emergent properties. Well... I mean... in a mundane sense, emergent properties are real. (like wetness of water etc.) But my thinking is that they can always be reduced to something else. And whatever lies underneath is the true mechanism of causation.

For instance, honey bees gathering nectar. I would want to say that, while it is horribly inefficient, the laws of physics at the atomic level CAN explain the honey bee gathering pollen. Is this the approach biologists use? Hell no. As I said before, it's inefficient. But that doesn't suggest emergent causation. (I guess emergent causation is really what I'm interested in... not emergent properties). As long as (hypothetically) the behavior of atoms could produce a better explanation for the bees gathering honey than the biologist's model, then we can say that physics describes what's going on in a more comprehensive and complete way.

Anyway, I'm not sold on the idea of absolute reductionism. Maybe emergent causation is possible. I've only begun to seriously think about it recently. But reductionism seems more plausible to me right now. I'm open to hearing arguments for emergent causation though.

I’m up for someone teaching me what emergent causation is. 😛

I don't even know if it's a real thing. It's a term I'm using to postulate something with causal powers that isn't reducible to elementary particles moving according to the laws of physics

It seems to me that no such thing exists. But maybe I'm not seeing something

Edit: what she said.

I declare my defeat in this debate since my last chance was checking the sun's core composition; and it turns out it is actually plasma:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_core

Quote:The core of the Sun is considered to extend from the center to about 0.2 to 0.25 of solar radius.[1] It is the hottest part of the Sun and of the Solar System. It has a density of 150 g/cm3 at the center, and a temperature of 15 million kelvins (15 million degrees Celsius, 27 million degrees Fahrenheit).[2]

The core is made of hot, dense plasma (ions and electrons)

And I will obey what the Quran said about the composition of souls:

Quote:Sura 17, The Quran:
https://quran.com/17:85?store=false&translations=

(85) And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair [i.e., concern] of my Lord. And you [i.e., mankind] have not been given of knowledge except a little."
