So, I had someone begging me for pennies yesterday. She was all, "Do you have change?"

Me: "No."

Her: "You have change."

Me: "I have sixteen cents, all pennies."

Her: "I'll take a penny."

Me: "What are you going to buy with a penny?"

Her: "I don't know."

The candy store I worked at had candy you could buy for a penny, even if it was just the shit we needed to get rid of. But then, it closed less than a week ago.

So, I had someone begging me for pennies yesterday. She was all, "Do you have change?"

Yeah, it's a tough call. There are places in this city which give food to the hungry. There are even free food vans which go around at night.

I will pretty much always give a street drunk at least $10 if I have it. I'm a recovering alcoholic (Sober since June 30 2002) I know what  it's to like crave a drink.  I'm not suggesting for a second that anyone else should do as I do. 

I worked for Federal Social Security here in Oz for 25 years. During that time I concluded that in my opinion, there is one and only one criteria for charity; need.

UGH - DST - This weekend we turn the clocks back an hour.  I have to say it's not as bad now that I am not going to work and coming home from work in the dark but I still don't like it being dark so early in the evening (or late afternoon).  Need to up my intake of vitamin D to make up for living in darkness.

We did ours back in September. Though I think it's a silly, outmoded practice that should be consigned to the dung heap of history, it's never bothered me.

When I was working around Dallas I would have to leave the house in the dark for my commute and it would get dark either before or during my commute home. That meant I spent the daylight hours trapped in a building...often nowhere near a window. That's what bothered me most. Now with working from home I don't have to deal with that.

Daylight Savings Time screws up my sleep for months afterward in the spring. I've been setting an alarm for 8:00 this week, which will switch to 7:00 on Sunday.

I dread becoming old where I will start opining on "kids these days" and shitting on their choices. I have been hating it the whole time the older generation has been doing it to me and my peers, realizing that they're just cranky and stuffy with old ideals and outdated values and trying to control the change and progress of the world, rather than adapting.

I am glad that I have always remembered what it was like to be a teenager. It sure helped with my kids and now helps me relate to my grandkids.

I remember how I felt when mom and dad fussed about my choices in music and clothes and such. I did my best to let my kids go through whatever phases they were in at the time knowing that it's important to try on different things till you find what fits you. Funny - I again have the long hair my mother hated and mostly wear the jeans and T-shirts my father hated.

Not all of us old fogeys are cranky and stuffy. And you don't have to become that either.

I'm 65, and in my opinion young people today are a lot better informed and more sophisticated than we were when I was young.  They have great advantages with computers, smart phones, the internet, streaming services, and so on.

About the only thing we had better was the music, and it's still around to enjoy anyway.
