Indeed. Pretty sneaky. Great tactic, lousy timing.
Sun Tzu wrote that war is about deception. Some one in militarist Japan may have read that. Obviously didn't read the whole book. If they had they would have realised they had already lost when they attacked America in that way.

How were they going to do that deception? Paint over the rising sun with swastika?

I know this is a joke thread..but..fuck...this is one of my favorite things. The main architect of the attack on pearl harbor went to his grave (at the hands of a patrolling american p-38, clutching his sword..in dress...) thinking that the pearl harbor attack was a terrible idea.
That's pretty impressive, on a personal level. Yamamoto is a personal hero of mine. He knew what had to be done, doubted that it could be achieved, but gave it his level best when pursuing that goal.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Actually, the issue is not clear cut at all. If the roles of the US and Japan were reversed, and the US found itself in the position Japan found herself in November 1941, I have no doubt the US would have decided to go to overt hostility at or around that time as well.
Due to its testosterone driven self-righteous view of Pearl Harbor and total unwillingness to contextualize the event, the US really learned no real fundamental lessons from it at all. Which is fundamentally why the US found itself currently at such logger heads with Russia regarding Ukraine and NATO Expansion into the former Soviet Union, and with China over Taiwan. Not to mention the long-standing geopolitical tensions over domination of the Pacific

It was a text book sneak attack and caught America unprepared, destroying most of its Pacific fleet. The Japanese did not try to conceal their identity.
Watch the clip below in which FDR declared war on Japan the next day.
His speech begins; " Yesterday, December 7 1941 is a date which will live in infamy-------"

Are we holding current generations responsible for the crimes of their parents and grandparents still?
How biblical.
