I'm confused. You criticized cops for only showing up after the fact, but now you're saying that showing up before a crime is committed would be disastrous. You can't have it both ways.

Why can't I have it both ways? I think police cannot be useful either way. OK, maybe they would be useful (I am not sure about that) if they caught criminals and put them in rehabilitation centers, but that's not remotely what they are doing nor what somebody here proposed.

I think so. Either that or killing them outright. Temporarily putting them in prisons, places from which they will return with even more psychological problems, makes no sense.
Your lunacy knows no bounds.
If you incarcerate a child molester, rapist...whatever....let's say for 20 years, that means for 20 years they aren't roaming the streets molesting and raping. Seems like a decent plan to protect people, at least for a while.
Killing them outright isn't usually something civilized people are up for anymore.

I think …yeah, sure…there’s reason to suspect that some category of crime could be prevented by investigations and catching criminals. It wouldn’t be such an effective deflection if it seemed too ridiculous to entertain. Yet another problem with our cops. They don’t do enough of that, because they’re too busy doing something else and -calling- it that. Fail on both ends.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

This is somewhat false. The police can take you to the emergency room as a psych patient with a temporary hold, but, the evidentiary standard is quite high.

Like I asked my nephews, friend's kids, kid's friends, etc. when they hit that libertarian phase: have you studied history at all? Have you looked at the events of the past that lead to laws, regulations, and systems to enforce them? Is the best solution to fixing a system that only works part of the time to completely do away with it?
And in answering, show your math.

Which is absolutely NOT the same as putting someone in rehab.

Actually, the standards aren't that high. I've had that happen multiple times just on another person's say-so.

Putting someone on a psychiatric hold is an attempt to determine if they’re a looney. Putting someone in rehab is an attempt to help them not be a looney.
Worlds apart.

If you are under a temporary order and in need of rehab, they will perform rehab.
