Snubbing "low" for "high" culture doesn't make one an intellectual.  True intellect can enjoy deep thoughts while watching Road Runner cartoons.

Not to mention that anyone who has ever seen the films of Bergman or Kurosawa (and a hundred other filmmakers) wouldn’t make such a crassly stupid statement as the OP.

it's pop culture
literature is a real art
do you agree

Does that include documentaries?

Shit, I may have to shoot myself now.

Yeah, he needs to dial it back a bit.  Such as a correlation between watching reality TV and never having read a book.

Movies can be art, or they can be dreck. Modern movies seem to lean to the latter by my tastes, but bear in mind I love movies like Stripes or Airplane too. Absurdity and dumb humor definitely have a place in my heart.

If w
Quote:e say that movies are moving pictures on a screen, with sound, then there's nothing intrinsically bad about them. They can be art.

In the real world, though, nearly all movies are made by corporations and their only goal is to make a profit. This nearly always prevents them from being more than lowest-common-denominator cliche. The same story gets made again and again, with small variations, because it sells.

Unfortunately publishing is increasingly the same, so a lot of what gets sold as "literature" is nearly as bad. Great literature sells a lot of books over time, but for-profit publishers don't think in terms of centuries. They want immediate appeal.

Overall there have certainly been more great books than great movies. But that's just due to the medium being newer, and the fact that it came of age in a time thoroughly saturated by capitalism.

Here is a movie which I think is as worth your time as most books you might pick up at the bookstore.

It was made by an individual, for relatively little money. She didn't have to please the accountants or satisfy focus groups. Of course it's also been seen by a tiny fraction of the number of people who've watched the latest stupid action flick.
I refuse lectured on culture by a man who thinks Sauron  was one of the wizards and doesn't understand or appreciate the moral  nuances of Star Wars

uninformed generalizations and flippant dismissal of material nuances are not for intellectuals.

I watched some episodes of The Mandalorian.

It's about 90% about people (or robots) killing other people (or robots). There was a cute green thing in the center, which I guess is what constitutes "moral nuance."

It completely reinforced the constant message of American media, which is that the good guy is the one who makes the most effective use of violence.

So you missed the whole message of the show then... Dodgy

Stuff like  Mandalorians having to reckon with the consequences of being a culture based on violence or the faults of the Jedi leading to their downfall or the political questions of which is more important order or liberty?  or the question is everyone who happens to work with evil group evil themselves evil? Or hell all sorts of questions about violence and people who commit it. Questions about loyalty and duty  where you draw the line on those things.

You came to the show with a superficial attitude and saw the superficial. I came to the show understanding the moral nuances being explored and saw them being played out.
