There were many notable exceptions, but not enough. Plus my friend group included a lot of Democrats so I often had my positions challenged and had to concede I was wrong about some things. Couldn't help but notice the Scandinavian countries never had that economic collapse my libertarian associates predicted for decades, for instance. I also noticed a lot of crazy things being said about Hillary Clinton leading up to the 2016 elections didn't stand up to scrutiny. I couldn't help but think if the Republicand and many libertarians had more substantial criticisms of her, they'd use them instead of conspiracy theories. I started considering myself a Democrat after Trump's election (I voted no Republicans down ballot and Gary Johnson for president) and now reject the notion that it's some kind of sin to vote for the 'lesser evil'. I find myself to the left of Mahr on a lot of things now, a fair amount of what he peddles is bullshit.

Sounds about like me as well, if you rewind back to Obama's first term.  I have no use for Maher.

I guess I walked the same path - but it lead me to be a non-participator.  I was committed enough to a set of political beliefs that I actually..not metaphorically or politically, fought for them.  Now?  Meh.  It can all burn and maybe then I'll feel as motivated as I once was.  I don't begrudge people who find themselves at the "lesser evil" point, but I went through and left that place.  Consequentially, I still like Maher, and when he  JAQs off all over a bad take I just think "well, bless his heart."
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Meh, I think my participation is out of a misplaced sense of duty, even though I've left the USA.

So not long ago Matt Walsh got absolutely fact-checked by Joe Rogan and called out for the liar he is for claiming millions of kids were on puberty blockers only for Joe to cite actual numbers that weren't even close to a million.

Now his sycophants insist he wasn't lying he was giving an estimate because we don't know the numbers so he had to guess. That's bullshit. If you don't know the numbers say you don't know and then shut the fuck up or do what Joe did and look it up before speaking. It may not be a perfect number but it's one backed by actual data. Anything else and your pulling numbers out of your ass and that's dishonest.

In fairness, it's possible that he came through those numbers through something that's less bald-faced lying and more through a delusional attempt at logic from someone who can't understand jack shit about the issues he's building his livelihood on.

Case in point, during his famous campaign against the Boston Children's Hospital, he interpreted this video:

as "According to Boston Children’s Hospital, literally every toddler who has ever been born, or will ever be born, is trans." (The quote comes from Walsh's YT video "The Trans Militants Must Be Stopped | Ep. 1001")

If this is the sort of leap you take, suddenly, deciding that millions of kids are on puberty blockers seems like a comparatively sensible conclusion. Granted, it's one that only makes sense if you're deeply unhinged, but "millions of kids are being put on puberty blockers" is the sort of take that's so batshit and so blatantly removed from reality that it's hard to imagine that anyone who's deliberately lying about it could expect people to believe it. Even in a world where preposterous right-wing conspiracies are mainstream now, it just seems to obviously bullshit of a take for any liar to seem convincing.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Needing multiple square meals a day is a myth.

Ever since my metabolism slowed down, I'm struggling to shed pounds on only one meal a day.

Huh. I guess having a sleep disorder that usually makes me sleep much of the day has its perks after all.

The saddest bit about gun violence in the US is that it barely qualifies as ‘news’ anymore.
