So where are we now? We live in a world where cops and soldiers are moral paragons, people are experts at correctly assessing risk, airplanes seem like dragons, and there are more people brandishing weapons at passersby than there are criminals to go around.

I am from Croatia. I meant that stories about people flying on airplanes sound unreal, like stories about people flying on dragons. No, my assumptions that countries that feel safer are actually safer and that cops and soldiers are moral paragons are not based on a study. Only that guns save more lives than they take is based on a study (the Gary Kleck's study).
