I've lived alone most of my life, and I really like it that way. Anyone I decide to be with would have to be happy with us having our own lives. My Nan was with her boyfriend for 20-odd years before she died and they never lived together. Perfect.

Reasonably intelligent - they don't have to be a rocket scientist, but I'd like to be able to have a decent conversation.
Good sense of humour.
The ability to put up with my mood swings.
Good hygiene.

Really though, I don't see myself in a relationship at all, I'm pretty over it.

Brother, you are so gloomy, I began to drink the instant I read this post of yours.

Best you get married, and have a family, so you have people to look after you when you get old.

Damn, some of you people have a LOT of criteria for your significant other.

Shit ... all I ever looked for was a pretty smile and a sassy disposition. The rest is just fun to discover and roll with it.

This surprises me. I certainly didn't mean it to come across gloomy (hence the "I really like it that way") I'm very happy being single. As for the getting married to have someone to look after me, I have a son. I don't feel the need to have more children - I got it right the first time. He's perfect! Big Grin
Marriage is certainly no guarantee of being taken care of.

Bottoms up!

No kidding, makes me think of a quote I found once that said “We waste time looking for the perfect lover, instead of creating the perfect love.”

I say you should love someone for who they are not who you want them to be. No one wants to be with someone who's going to say "I wish you could be more like..." or "I wish you would enjoy [whatever] like me" Enjoy your similarities as a couple but respect your differences.

I know exactly how you feel. I have only one son and he is completely amazing. Improvement on him would be absolutely impossible. He's fucking beautiful, brilliant, obedient and kind. I could not make a child to rival him. He is the closest thing to perfection I have ever seen.

I have a very strong feeling that someday he's going to make his old man look like a total burnout in comparison. Undecided

Man, I know what I want. I am willing to compromise, and be understanding, but there are some things that just break the deal. I've been through a lot in relationships, and I think that it's not only about finding the right person, but being the right person. I don't expect to find a guy that can check everything on that list, but my kids don't need to see mom with another fixer-upper. I'm better off alone, if that's the case.

I know what I want and need, and I know enough about myself (finally) to understand what types of men can and can't handle me.

I have no children yet, but I plan on having them when I can look after them, with their mother.

Why do I get the feeling that's a dig at me? Thinking

My son's father and I get along so well now, probably better than when we were together. And he certainly hasn't missed out by us not being a couple - we have looked after him together, just not in the same house. He knows we both love him, and that's the most important thing as far as I'm concerned.

It certainly isn't, friend.
It's just along the lines of the values that I promote, and try to uphold.
And if it works out for you and your son, it's fine. I'm not telling anyone to uphold a marriage where people are unhappy.
You might have gotten divorced for a number of reasons..I'm sure your son understands.
