The only one being foolish here is you. I read it and I gave you a reply. I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree with Hovik. No-one claimed electrical impulses have sentience. Electrical impulses are used to carry the information and relay it. As a result, we have sentience. I suggest you all end this promptly and amicably. You are all making a mockery of this thread. I never said anyone claimed electrical impulses have sentience. I asked if that is what she meant since she basically refused to answer. Ok, you are saying the information (or thoughts) are encoded on the electrical impulses. How so? Where did the encoding come from? The electrical impulses in our brain (and in the rest of the body) are no different in quality from the electricity running through power lines or what we get from batteries. Neither of those have any encoded information do they? (May 25, 2012 at 9:13 pm)Phil Wrote:(May 25, 2012 at 9:02 pm)RaphielDrake Wrote: No-one claimed electrical impulses have sentience. I did not "refuse to answer", you weren't making any sense to me, so I was trying to clarify before I proceeded. You really don't need to be so rude, I'm being as cordial as possible. Of course your thoughts are about things. I'm sure you experienced it while you were constructing your retort. And cognition is a huge part of thought, which lies it the parts of the brain that the child would be born without. I really not sure what you're saying. You're not making much sense. answers my question? Not at all nor did I mention anything about the child nor his missing brain. I asked about our thoughts which you said are about things. You never backed that up with anything except an of course they are which is an answer to nothing. Do either of you quite comprehend how awe inspiringly dull it is to witness two people debate communication errors? Its up there with listening to Kevin Bacon chat about his favorite carpet samples.
We produce electricical impulses through utilizing the various sugars, carbohydrates and nutrients we absorb and convert from our food content. If you wire electricity into a tv or a radio it ceases to be simply raw electricity and gets used doesn't it? Now try applying that to a machine infinitely more complex and organic like our brains. I hope this fairly simple, basic explaination which should of been easily producable by everyone here satisfies both of you so I can get back to laughing at Godschi- I mean... various crazy people.

To be honest, I'm not sure if even the top neuroscience experts know exactly how this process works. Pretty much exactly what I was asking for and oddly enough, it agrees with me in saying that top neuroscientists aren't sure of the process so how can you (not a neuroscientist) make the claim that our thoughts are about something when even they can't make that claim? Are you going to end this merry-go-round and retract your claim now or at least admit that it has no scientific backing and is a faith based (not religious) claim? The electrical impulses sent through our brains are like the information sent from and recieved by the CPU. The information by itself is meaningless without the CPU to decipher and utilize it.

It is the brain that makes the decisions and not us. At least current research shows the brain making choices before we do by at least 200 milliseconds. That would be an entirely different topic though. |
