A theist boyfriend?

RE: A theist boyfriend?

We always find the reasons to believe the things we must.

That you have already chosen to pose the question, to me, says that you have chosen the answer for you. The rest is wishing well, and saves you not.

its still possible im sure that one can have same sort of values but still disagree on specific things,of course this difference of where we come from, what's it all about is a big difference. But most of the time on a practical level atheists, theists agrees on lots of moralities and things. How you look into the future, how you dream, how you view things is of course based upon who you are,who you want to become and so on.

I have dated theists.

But I could never date a creationist. Willful ignorance is too much to tolerate.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Presuming things between you two would work and the relationship would get to the point where you would want to get married, would you put up with a church ceremony, knowing full well the emptiness behind such a service? Would you enjoy that day and cherish those memories? Also, would you accept your kids to be dumbed down with bible teachings and all the crap that would be forced on them by their father?
I have no problem sharing a common ancestor with the apes; it's being related to some people that bothers me.

Honestly, if he discounts evolution and is a "hardcore" christian then it's not going to work in my opinion. You'll get fed up with the stupid. You guys will eventually have an argument about something and it will turn into a fundie/atheist insult fest. My $0.02

I'd say go for it, though with the added point that if they're not open to tolerant discussion about their beliefs then that might be a problem. I don't think just agreeing to not talk about differing religious opinions is the way forward anymore than having to be of the same opinion. You should be able to discuss such things with a feelings of mutual respect.

Many great replies. I agree with those that base the possibility of a future together on how devout he is. The 'came from monkeys' bit concerns me. Is this just ignorance that can be overcome?

Check out what he is devoted to. Go to church with him. Investigate his brand of theism. If it's a fire and brimstone or literal/divinely inspired sect immediately pull the eject lever. The reason I say this is that he will constantly be surrounded by people that will consider you the devil incarnate and give him advice to eject you. Politely challenge his devotion to his beliefs and be prepared to offer alternatives.

Also consider that he may find you intriguing because you're not like the rest and are still enjoyable to be around. He may just be ignorant of certain ideas, such as evolution, and has only been exposed to one true way. Not all Christians are nuts. Until proven otherwise, give him credit. He may be using you as a life-line.
