A WTF Moment...

Tell me, am I overreacting? I have a tendency to do that sometimes, but right now I am just pissed.

She'll hear alot of that kind of thing, I mean didn't we all? Its a part of growing up.
At least it teaches her to stay away from strange men so thats a huge benefit.

This is a tough situation and I do not envy you. The biggest problem with discipline in this instance is that all the children will learn is to make sure the adults do not hear it next time.

Like you say, she is not a bad child and does not deserve disciplinary action, but rather a gentle reminder of what is nice and what is not. I would not even use the word "bad".

when i was 7 or 6 i was shown my families fotoalbum, 3 of my grandunkles and my great granddad were members of the SA and at that age, not understanding what that uniforms and symbols on the foto meant, i painted childrenpictures with swastikers and a swastiker on my mums car.
my mother didn`t punish me and 4-5 years later i had a better understanding of what i did.

this is certainly a more typical german situation but certainly comparable to yours.
at a young age one might not understand a serious issue, i remember precicly how my mother didn`t tell me off, but just showed feelings of discontent not towards my actions but more towards the results ergo; not telling me off but explaining me in a way that i understood ,as a child, that informing yourself on things you didn`t understand is nececery before engaging in further interaction - so in the end a valuable lesson for a growing up child.

today when i visit my parents - this is more a joke they use to turn my face red.

Definitely overreacting. She has no idea what that means. I, and countless other children, heard far worse at school. Sure, it's not appropriate, but really it's a rhyme about not wanting to go to school. How appropriate was it to begin with?

That's just my two cents, though. You can't freak about every little thing. You can only teach them what is right and wrong.

Today I had a HUGE "WTF Moment".

My daughter loves poetry/nursery rhymes, and I've taught her a lot of them. One of her favorites, especially since she just started school is:

"I don't wanna go to school no more more more. There's a big fat bully at the door door door. He'll hang ya by the collar, and make ya pay a dollar, I don't wanna go to school no more more more."

Cute, I know. Silly, absurd, perhaps even a little inappropriate, depending on the company.

Today, she got in the car after school, and informed me that a little boy in her class said that's not how it goes. She then recited for me the "correct version", that Jose so graciously taught her today:

"I don't wanna go to Mexico no more more more. There's a big fat priest at the door door door. He'll make you touch his rocket, and use you as a socket, I don't wanna go to Mexico no more more more."

I don't know whether to be amused, or enraged. My daughter has no idea what she's saying, of course, and thinks it's funny, and clever. My first reaction was to be appalled that this was coming out of my child's mouth, and then it was anger. It would've been hilarious if Min had said it, or anyone else but a child. Now I have to go talk to her teacher. I don't want Jose punished. He is just repeating what he's heard. I want someone to investigate where he learned this. It's an inappropriate thing for a child to hear, much less know by heart, and teach to the rest of the kindergarteners in his class.

I think enraged is overreacting. This is normal kid stuff, but following up is appropriate. Do you know Jose's parents? I'd suggest calling his mom. She should know about it so she can understand who's teaching it to him. If your daughter was the one with the song, would you want to know? The point of the call is not to complain to Jose's mom, since obviously she doesn't condone this behavior.

The best thing you can do as a parent is have a strong network with other parents.
