Question to Christians re humility
September 30, 2012 at 6:23 pm
(This post was last modified: September 30, 2012 at 6:27 pm by Doubting_Thomas.)
One of the criticisms we often see levelled against Atheism, and particularly scientifically argued atheism, is that the doubters are "arrogant" and should be more "humble".
What is really meant by this, is there a Christian-specific meaning to humility? We all know the dictionary definitions, but I'm confused how any such criticism isn't equally or more-so applicable to the religious position?
How can complete confidence in some interpretation of the bible, which spells out so many amazing things which we are told are factual, be any more humble than the atheist position of evidence based reasoning? The reasoning atheist acknowledges the caveats of what they 'know', whereas the faithful Christian is in no doubt about the existence of god.
Sorry if this is an old topic done to death, but I am curious and never heard the Christian side of this.

Some are under the impression that we are just too prideful to follow god/think we don't need him. This is ironic, considering they think the whole universe was created just for humans. That being said:

Don't worry, you'll soon meet all the other Christians who reside here. Some of them are actually pretty decent as well

What is really meant by this, is there a Christian-specific meaning to humility? Yes. Humble as a Slave is to his Master.

The atheist position demands a reason for action. A slave does what he is told and sometimes the reasons will follow.

The reasons the Atheist knows nothing of God and the reason the Believer is in 'No doubt' is because one humbles himself before God and allows God to lift him up, and the other expects God to humble Himself before the atheist and then perform God 'tricks' to prove Himself before man.

See why us arrogant atheists might like a little proof?

You openly admit you are nothing more than a slave to god...glad we cleared that up.
And sometimes reasons won't follow and you'll find out you did something horrible because you never asked. Now let's see how that attitude would work out for you under Hitler...
Funny, he did 'god tricks' all of the time in the bible. Even Jesus did something as trivial as supply extra alcohol at a party!

Humility just means not boasting, but the Christian version has more to do with a humble submission (not the submission of Islam mind you) where we admit that our "good" works are not because of us or our own actions but because of God's work through us.
We also don't like to think of ourselves as "good" people....now mind you, you'd get a better, more developed answer from a Catholic as they focus more on guilt than Protestants.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
