I spent dawn on Christmas Day shovelling my walks (the penalty of a corner lot), because the church across the street expected to have its typical big day of the year, when more people than live in town come to church.
It is not so much that I support the church (I don't) but I don't want my neighbours and friends from miles around parking in front or at the side of my house (the church has no parking lot) slipping and falling in the ice and snow. While I was out shovelling in below 0F weather, the church sexton arrived to do the walks in front of the church (she had the benefit of a snow thrower). She knows I would never set foot in that church except for a neighbour's funeral or wedding or last year when I went in during the night when it was unlocked to check for burglars. But when we were both done, she invited me in to have some hot apple cider she'd just made for the parishioners . . . no proselytisation, just cider. Yum. Thanked her and went home to salt my walks.
