In a world without God...
Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do children get cancer? Why do bad people always seem to thrive?

Is there a reason any of those things shouldn't happen?

Those questions have been asked and answers searched for since man became an introspective creature. The simplest answer is that these things happen because they can happen. The universe has no vested interest in preventing your child from getting cancer. It doesn't care. How could it? The laws of nature are not judgmental. Only people are.

-- Samuel "Mark Twain" Clemens

"I think that in the discussion of natural problems we ought to begin not with the scriptures, but with experiments, demonstrations, and observations".

- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

"In short, Meyer has shown that his first disastrous book was not a fluke: he is capable of going into any field in which he has no training or research experience and botching it just as badly as he did molecular biology. As I've written before, if you are a complete amateur and don't understand a subject, don't demonstrate the Dunning-Kruger effect by writing a book about it and proving your ignorance to everyone else! "

Aren't these questions more relevant in a world that supposedly features a benevolent deity that interacts with the world? Thinking

Because "things" are always happening to people. A certain subset of those "things" are bad - and a certain subset of those people are good. Wherever those two subsets overlap -bad things are happening to good people.

Quote:Why do children get cancer?
The answer would depend upon what type of cancer we're talking about. Generally, genetics, tobacco, diet and physical activity, sun and UV exposure, radiation exposure....and a whole host of other carcinogens.

Quote:Why do bad people always seem to thrive?
You're asking -us- why -you- perceive something a specific way. In any case.... circumventing the rules that others follow can sometimes offer you an advantage.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. That's not a bad thing for him, that's justice for society and yourself. He may believe it's bad, but it's obvious he does not understand rightness, he cares nothing for the payment of evil one does to another. What happen to him was proper and necessary for moral reasons.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Yet you're gleefully awaiting your celestial pass for your own inequities.

Something is amiss. You clearly understand a concept, but seem to be relieved that it might not apply to you.
