Oldest known Bible goes online

RE: Oldest known Bible goes online
Oldest? It's the same age as Codex Vaticanus - which I might add is still in one peice, whereas Sinaiticus isn't.

Notice this part:
  • The British government bought most of the pages of the ancient manuscript in 1933.

They only have part of Sinaiticus.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

The best use for the original piece of sh'cript'shr would be to conduct an experiment to see whether the material it was written on still burns after all those years. Ranting

At least it would finally give a little light, too.

4th century Drich? You act as though that were a "long long time ago". No one cares. Tell me why I should defer to something that was horrendously innacurate hundreds of years ago when I could instead defer to something that is horrendously innacurate today - say- scientology?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Cause ancient stuff has that, you know, je ne sais quoi Wink

Like people used to be wiser, more in touch with shit back in the olden days. Yeah, killing cats to fight a disease spread by mice/rats, burning the smartest women at the stake, going to war because some carpenter was nailed to a wooden cross hundrets of years before. Those people were the pinnacle of wisdom and the ones who wrote the bible must've been even wiser.

It's funny, I actually took the time to look up and cross reference a source that outlines all of the additions and omissions, and none of the nay sayers have even pointed to the first ACTUAL descrepency. All any of you can do is stand on the sidelines and point to the idea that there is a difference (how ever small) between a 1700 year old copy of the bible and a modern bible itself. How about this if you dont want to talk book chapter and verse. Show me another 1700 year old book that is still in print that has as few or fewer changes than the bible does. Maybe we can start there. If your not able to find anything and your not willing to discuss the actual changes made then know your arguements are empty and meaningless. Akin to the trash talk a 12 year old gives after he has had his but kicked, by the fat kid.

Okay, what I find disappointing in this thread is the uninformed opinions that are being posted. It's just as bad as 9/11 "truthers" who have no idea of what the facts really are.

Post your opinion, fine, but first go and inform yourself.

1. This is not the "oldest" copy of the Bible.
2. It is of Alexandrian text-type. We know about the textual variants in the greek mss, we have scholars who specialize on these variants. We use critical texts as the basis for the Biblical text, therefore, any mss will contain variants from it.
3. The order of the OT books is arranged differently from the Jewish order, the order of the NT books is largely irrelevant as their order (as we have them in our Bible) is based (loosely) on type and length.
4. There's nothing new about this, it's a text type that has been studied for centuries, and the codex isn't new. We are discovering new mss all the time, and that's what is really exciting.

So 5,000 years from now someone digs up Harry Potter, anyone want to guess if some nut starts a religion based on that fairy tale by then?
