From the original list, I liked the Shawshank Redemption and Shindler's List .. though I admit they were just damn good entertainment. (Sounds like Apo had the reaction to these two that I had to The Color Purple *gag*.) Not on the list but better than the others, I like Groundhog Day, and, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Of the franchise movies, I've liked: the Matrix saga; the Lord of the Rings movies; the Bourne lot; and the Star Wars films. The Game of Thrones and True Blood episodes on HBO are kind of like these and equally good. Oh hell, throw in the I Claudius episodes from pbs while we're at it.

For a nail biter I'd go with Day of the Jackal (the original). For the best, surprisingly good adaption of a book to movie form I'd choose Steppenwolf.

There have been numerous little foreign movies we've enjoyed whose names are escaping me, along with plenty of other Hollywood films which will make me cringe when I remember them.

I guess I don't appreciate movies properly. I watch to be entertained, just as I eat to satisfy hunger. I love Steak, but sometimes, I really love a cheeseburger. I couldn't make a top ten list of foods, and only put the most decidant dishes on the list! Saying that Tacos outrank Hamburgers is just absurd. I love No Country for Old Men, but sometimes, Major League II is what I'm in the mood for. If i'm ranking movies, it must be according to the long-term satisfaction I can continue to draw from them, after repetition.

I enjoyed Forrest Gump, but I've always held a grudge against it. Back before I realized that the Academy Awards was a self-congratulatory wankfest, I was super pissed that it beat out Pulp Fiction for best picture.

Every now and then a movie comes along that just nails the stereotype that it strives for -like Star Wars or Django Unchained. Then even though it is formulaic and predictable, it just makes you appreciate the genre itself anew. But then there are ones like The Color Purple, where at times I found myself wincing at the shlocky lack of restraint. It felt like reading a hallmark card.

Now the Matrix is not a fine movie but it's a great idea that is executed well. The Bourne movies are just plain fun. I enjoy these. But then there are occasionally ones that give you something interesting to think about too. When you get both in one movie, it goes on my short list. That's just me and I am definitely not turning my nose up at good entertainment.

What The Matrix had going for it was "new" - it was something fresh that hadn't been done before, and as a former lover said, it finally burst "cyberpunk" into the mainstream. The mistake The Matrix made was Keanu Reeves. To be fair, that's the mistake every movie Keanu is in makes. Bram Stoker's Dracula would have been an opulent, fine piece were it not for his dour face.
