The difference being only the temporal proximity of the sword. Oh, and it's existence, of course.

Heh, true. But who's to say the fear of hell isn't real in that person's mind?

How would you like it if I went around quoting Star Wars all day long, expecting you to follow the path of the Light Side of the Force? Or what if I spouted off to you the philosophies of the Galactic Federation of Planets from Star Trek? Why the fuck should we take stock in what a 2000 year old book says? The answer is simple; we shouldn't. If you're going to believe any old text that talks about Zombie Messiahs, then you'd better be prepared to explain why you don't also believe in the Book of Mormon, Al-Quran, or any other ancient text that totes god figures as a people's saving grace.

Well...clearly those other books were written by false gods.....as opposed to the bible which was dictated by the one true god.

(And these jesus freak fuckers think I don't listen to what they say!)

Not nearly so cool as quoting from Pulp Fiction.

Jesus came over this morning and told me that he didn't say that. He told me that the first century scribe that wrote it was high as a kite on mushrooms and wine. "and he should know!"

I can consider this point conceded then? Down with preaching?

Without this fatal cosmic truth about our human condition, there would be no point in signing up to the relative religion.

It seems humans were never unaware of the problem, so the opposite is also true: the relative religion is essential given the human condition.

Yes great Smile A weeks ban for anyone that brings up any biblical reference.

Biblical references are fine in the context of religious discussion. It's when someone uses the bible (or kerrang, or whatever) as a weapon to castigate their opponents and elevate themselves above the status of ordinary humans that it becomes preaching, particulary when done so in place of discourse.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

The only ones not unaware were the snakeoil salesmen themselves.

Miracles

The belief that something that can't possibly happen happened.

It is stupid to believe in them by definition.
