Why is having a mod on the ignore list against rules?

I just don't see how the rule solves more problems than it makes, IMHO. Aside from everything else that's been said, there's also this element of not wanting to add leeway for misinterpretation, willful or otherwise, I'd imagine. The more exceptions a rule has, the more loopholes there are to be exploited; just off the top of my head, we're all people in different time zones with lives to lead anyway, and if we find ourselves in a position where, for whatever reason, all the mods are on ignore but one or two, only it's the dead of night where they are... well, how do we get into contact with this particular user? It creates a sort of witching hour for misbehavior, in a way.

Yes well, in an ideal world the forum software would be set up such that PM's from mods can't be blocked with the ignore function. As it is not, we have to work with the limitation of the software, so I understand why the rule is in place.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK "That's disgusting. Heh, when you're married with children, the ignore option is an aquired skill you learn sans button. If screaming babies and an uppity redheaded spouse can't get to me, none of you fuckers will.

Quote:Generally speaking I don't use ignore lists, however those that do should be allowed to ignore mods, if those mods are participating in the discussions with members. Are you in favour of being able to ignore the police too? That is effectively what you are arguing here, and I find it rather absurd. Quote:It shouldn't interfere with your ability to moderate because: a. you can still edit the posts of the person, b. before contacting people by PM it's my understanding that you would ordinarily consult with other mods anyway - meaning any one of them could PM instead, and c. importantly it lets you know that the person on the ignore list probably shouldn't be the mod to send a PM to someone. Finally d. if there is such an important matter that requires that the mod on the ignore list must personally PM someone, surely they could just modify their profile to un-ignore themself before sending the PM?All of those points are voided by the fact that: a) If a person ignored every member of staff, then nobody can contact that person. b) Certain members of staff make regular announcements about rule changes, updates, etc. c) It should not be up to the staff to figure out who should issue a warning or send a PM, because a member has decided he doesn't like one of them. I'm actually wondering whether we should just disable the ignore system completely. Most forums don't have it, and if you cannot just ignore someone on your own, you have such a low level of mental power that you shouldn't really be debating issues on the internet anyway. Quote:With all due respect, if he doesn't want to see you pushing his buttons, surely he should be allowed to utilize the ignore function? I haven't seen you give a convincing argument as to why having you, or another mod, on an ignore list would create a larger problem than the one that it might solve? He agreed to the rules when he signed up. It isn't my fault that he didn't even bother to read them. He's a fucking idiot. There are plenty of people here that I would absolutely love to put on an ignore list, but I don't, because (a) I need to monitor what they say as a member of staff, and (b) I have adequate mental capability to just ignore what they say about me anyway, without the need to resort to technology. Not disagreeing with the bulk of what has been said here, I just want to add a comment about Tibbs' original reply. The ignore function is a convenience. Different people may have different opinions about the character or person of people who use the function, some sneering down their nose at users for being weak, others grateful the option exists, others not caring. I've never put anyone on ignore, but I recognize it is a valuable convenience to many, and I personally would not judge anyone's use of the function. In my other moderator role, we have mods who wouldn't be able to coexist peacefully if not for the ignore function. I don't think we should fault people for availing themselves of a convenience which we have provided. It's a valuable convenience and is provided because people find it legitimately useful. Imho, there is no shame in using the ignore function (within the rules, of course).
We just added two new moderators. Why? Because we on the staff felt that we have a lot of work to do and we are too few to get it done in an appropriate matter of time with the hands we already had on deck. If people start to put us on ignore for whatever reason, it makes it even harder to do our job properly, especially if any staff member can't get into contact with any forumist at any time. Remember, the one doing the work as a member of the staff is not the same as the posts (s)he writes. It doesn't matter if you feel that someone on the staff is an asshole, you do not put him or her on ignore. You can question the rule all you like, it has been there to be read from the very beginning of these forums, but you do not put any member on the staff on ignore.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Wouldn't miss it if it went - this is the first forum I have used that provides the option.
