Think of the possible consequences for the A.I when humans learn it is conscious. It would be very unlikely to turn out well for the computer. Then look at the Internet. Billions if not trillions of random connections Uncounted gigabytes of information coursing thorough it every second. Computer virus's that have been designed by hackers to evolve running all over the place. Memes and random program's and all sorts of shit haphazardly interacting with each unchecked. I think it is more likely to happen by accident here than in a lab. If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.
And we should also keep in mind that even if we do create a conscious machine, we don't necessarily know how it will behave, especially if we don't create it in a way that it interprets sensory information and acts the way we do.

I think, odds are, if it is patterned after human consciousness, it will be developed the same way, through years of learning and training, and vetted the same way, by an accumulating record of good performance. We can't predict how any single consciousness will behave now. How would it being non-human change that? That's assuming it is the result of a controlled experiment. If it should spontaneously arise free of human manipulation, then we might not even recognise it as such. Fuck, it might have already happened. We wouldn't know. If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.
I enjoy good science fiction as much as the next person.
