Science is pretty much the best way to find out everything there is to know about everything. We don't have all the answers, and some answers we have may be wrong, but we're progressing primarily because we know there's more out there, and trying to stick supernatural forces in the gaps won't help anyone.

Yes, we do tend to generalize.
In our defense, however, there is a large population of extremely vocal and incredibly arrogant Christians in this country that seek absolute social domination over anyone that isn't rabidly shoving Christ down everyone else's throat. The generalizations come in because we heathens cope by spouting insults towards these idiots, and it gets extremely tiring adding the "I know not all Christians are like this, but I need to emote about this issue" caveat at the end of every rant.
A sensible answer to a joke comment (I was being ironic). But yeah, I think we in the UK often don't understand how tough it is to be an American atheist!

It depends entirely on where you live, I think. Where I live it's not bad, at least in the city.

Good point, which is something to guard against. There is a difference, though, between arrogance from a position of either dogmatic or self-aggrandised authority and perceived arrogance out of retaliation; i.e. shit attracts shit for the most part.

I live in Tennessee, in a small town in a population of mostly evangelical Southern Baptists... I answer the door to "Have you found Jesus?" more often than I care to put a number on. I've taken to answering "Someone should put a bell on that guy."
