You can definitely try to do this, but you have more important things to worry about than becoming mentally uncomfortable with your situation, like exposure and death. I helped a homeless man get an interview as a groundskeeper in my building and he said that even though like me he doesn't believe in God (he doesn't really know what to believe) he's not going to turn down a kind offer just because it's from a church.

I don't believe the state has any legal obligation to provide for the homeless. You don't have to believe in god to go to church. You don't have to pretend to be Christian to go to bible study. But you do have to go to church and bible study to gain admittance to this shelter. Sad, but true.
I think it's best to do what you've go to do in order to have a better chance of getting back on your feet sooner.

By what logic? The logic is that they are legally obligated to provide food stamps and cash assistance to those who qualify. They are not obligated to provide shelter. Not legally. My only logic is...that those are the actually legalities.
Depending on your state, you can apply for income based housing. Most states have a long waiting list. I have never seen a shelter run by the state. Most likely it is run by the church. Their shelter, their rules. Ya know?
