The death penalty ..

RE: The death penalty ..
Especially since they're already separated from society and aren't a threat to it already (though prisons aren't perfect and need a bumload of reform), whats the point of killing someone who's already in a cage for the rest of their life?

Sometimes the argument for the DP, is in the case of Ted Bundy. He escaped prison, and went on to rape/kill others. Then, when he was incarcerated after those crimes, he was given the death penalty.

To me, it's a broken system, all around...as you say in need of major reform.

Well yeah escapees from prison is another matter entirely. But that should say more about the ineptitude of our current prison system and nothing about the morality or effectiveness of the death penalty.

Yeah, 36 years have passed since then and escaping custody isn't as easy as it was back then. Also he escaped before his trial even began. He didn't escape once he was convicted.

So making a point about Bundy is building a strawman.

True. I personally don't agree with using the DP, anymore. But, that's just me.

I'm not pro DP...so, I have no need to build strawmen. lol But, point taken in the rest of your post. That's true.

I didn't mean, you do. You said, there are folks out there, who take the Bundy case to make their argument pro Capital punishment and I meant to respond, their's was a strawman argument.

John Waters has facetiously (maybe seriously?) put forth the idea the death penalty needs to be viewed more like the the Emmy or Oscar award for crime.

Heinlein presented the idea in one of his novels (Stranger in a Strange Land??) that the death penalty is more like being sent to the back of the line.

Other cultures view serious crimes as triggers for correction by 'karma'. And we have Peter at the Pearly Gates meting out rewards and condemnations for the newly deceased.

I'm also aware implementation of the death penalty in places like Texas and Illinois has been grotesquely perverted.

Very important courtesy.

Ok, if the mods of a site say stuff.. then I'll do that stuff..!

.. but isn't that what the ignore button is for? to not listen, but to not stifle free speech?

Just wondered... given that the person I have now just blocked has been insulting and rude to me and reported to admin, and I have responded with a tongue bitten, and the mods have (seemingly) done nothing about it..

Yet now I've set myself up for a fall because person X sees my posts, but I don't see his rudeness... not sure this is weighted as it should be !

Yeah jump on me for a PM, a bit like a letter or an email.. simply don't read it... no damage done... it's not a bomb! but let Boru call me moronic (or words to that effect) and he gets away with it!

Has Boru replied? I have no idea? I have blocked him.. works great this!

Being insulting and rude isn't against the rules, so what do you want us to do about it?

Well actually say just that... however, that approach just begs a row and a slanging match doesn't it?

Surely "give respect to others' opinions" should be first? rather than "be as rude and insulting as you like"?
