Common sense is supposed to describe the rules that everyone learns to help them navigate life. Sometimes what seems like common sense is just wrong because the answer is not black/white.

The connection with corporal punishment might be because they are appealing to the 'common sense' view that spanking will produce better mannered children. Older people tend make up more of Fox News' viewers. Each generation likes to fault the younger generation for being out of control so maybe the organization is trying to appeal to what older people believe is common sense.
