The thing is, regardless of what the emphasis is on, "officially", students would take away from it different things, depending on what they consider the most important aspect. For example, one student may see it merely as an exercise in debating skills, while another may see it as a religious discussion. They may even change their mind about what they think of the subject (ie become a theist, or become an atheist). So in practise, essentially, it would be a religious discussion to whoever considers it as such. In that sense, it wouldn't matter whether or not it's part of a wider exercise in debating skills, as it would still have the potential to change people's minds about the topic itself.

I'd like to see a ban on threads started with calculated ulterior motives. Threads designed by the original poster to be a 'set-up'... or 'bait'. Threads that the original poster, purposefully and with forethought, uses as a vehicle to further a personal agenda under the guise of something completely benign.

How about faith schools for adults? Or optional lessons about religion, for kids? Screw the optional lessons. The religious have shown extensively they are no experts on the concept of free thinking.

You completely put my thoughts into words. Well worded words at that.
I'm really shitty at giving kudos and rep. That's because I would be inconsistent in remembering to do them, and also I don't really want it to show if any favouritism is happening. Even worse would be inconsistencies causing false favouritisms to show. So, fuck it. Just assume that I've given you some good rep and a number of kudos, and everyone should be happy...

Regardless of your personal opinion, adults have a right to choose to hear what religious people have to say, and the same applies to kids, if they choose, don't they?

As for kids extreme caution is needed. Since, as most believers have been telling me for decades now, religion is such an all important issue it shouldn't be dealed with lightly. After all this will be a choice between eternal - mind you - damnation in a firy place and eternal life in heaven. So we don't want any indoctrination of some false religion and it is very important to choose the right religion from the happy abundance of denomminations, sects, and what have you.
We could of course use a multiple choice form in Kindergarten, but don't look at me when your kids get sent away to Tibet to enjoy the fruits of a free religious upbringing.
A better idea might be to wait till the age of about eighteen. An age that quite commonly is seen as an age at which the child can take on some adult responsibilities like fighting in wars and voting.
