I don't really see humanity sticking around in this solar system in the future. At the rate our technology is progressing, and with the huge number of earth-like habitable candidates on our list, humanity will most likely settle in a world outside our current solar system, and then proceed to infect the rest of the universe till the inter-galactic counsel decides to step in.

In any case, it would be a reasonable first step to settle in our solar system. If for nothing else than for ressources.

I am guessing the reason for settling in a different world would be BECAUSE we would have eradicated most of our species by that point and also destroyed most of our solar system.

I dunno - it would seem to me if we had eradicated most of our species (I assume you mean most of H. sapiens), it would take a lot of pressure off the resources we need to live, *and* that we'd have more pressing concerns than getting off of this rock.

I would think that overpopulation would be a huge motivator to find more space. (Though we still have a large number of problems to solve, not the least of which is actually getting there. Then there's the fact that we don't have anywhere to go *to* yet.)

Human beings will never leave the solar system. As a species, we aren't going to survive long enough to do it.

While I agree that technology is proceeding at a truly breathtaking pace, it isn't enough on its own. The capital, political will, and public sentiment are just as important as whatever sort of starships you build.

I don't expect to see humans on Mars in my lifetime, and I would be surprised if we had so much as a self-sustaining Lunar colony within that timeframe.

I don't like these views any better than anyone else, but I expect that we are going to whither and die (as a species) before we ever make it off this pretty little planet.

Overpopulation would be a reason for major wars. As well as dwindling ressources. Don't kid yourself. Mankind will never unite as long as there isn't an outside threat for the planet. And that's a dinosaur killer rather than an alien invasion.

Think of The 100 or Wall-E type scenario, humanity soon will have the capability to sustain life in outer space and colonize other planets (by soon, I don't mean our lifetimes but that of our grandchildren perhaps), but overpopulation or not, the only way we would get our lazy asses off of this rock is if it became totally inhabitable, be it by nature's fury or our stupidity or both. Because other than the survival of the species I don't see any other motivators strong enough to actually lead us away from this rock.

Given the number of light years we are from anything and the absence of warp drive or suspended animation, I don't think we're leaving the solar system anytime soon.
