How did he lie he stated the trees purpose?
"He" lied when "he" told them that eating from the tree would make them die on the same day. They supposedly lived long enough to be kicked out into the real world.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

He never said they would die that day. He stated they would "surely die"

And he didn't tell them they would gain the knowledge of good and calamity. Naughty God.
It was the stupidest plan ever conceived. He said they would die, but failed to mentioned it would be in 900 years. I think that's a substantial omission. Feel free to send me a private message.

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. I agree that "he" never said it, but not for the same reasons as you.

Genesis 2:17
"but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” The name gives it away. Stimbo if you didn't know the process of dying takes a life time.
How could they know what good and evil were before they had knowledge of good and evil?
I appreciate the deepity, however.

Therefore God wasn't lying to them as they wouldn't have understood. Stimbo you answered your own question.

He was clearly testing them to see if they would obey him, with death as a deterrent. And he was lying. Saying it's OK because it was 900 years later is weak.
The name of a tree does not usually contain information about what happens to you when you eat it's fruit. Expecting Adam to know it would actually give you knowledge is a bit of a stretch, especially as God was trying to stop them by threatening death so didn't want him to know this. At best he was implying you get knowledge but die. And not knowing what good and evil are, he had no idea what that even meant. God was not being up front. He was taking advantage of helpless people for his own amusement. Feel free to send me a private message.

Stimbo you answered your own question. This is gibberish. A lie is still a lie whether or not the person on the receiving end understands or not.
