Pretty sure Europe has religious shitwads running for office, preaching the same platform there as they do here. Let's not exaggerate...lol.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

One of many ways in which the GOP is completely out of touch with reality.

I'm a hippy. I work in Northern California in the fall. I guess some people will probably know what that means. I also do some street performing and some rock climbing guiding from time to time to supplement my income. There are things I like about the European system, but my particular lifestyle is harder to do in most European countries. Capitalism gives you the ability to work as much as you want, but it also gives you the ability to not work as much as you like as well. I'm not going to waste my precious time in existence for 2 or 6 weeks of vacation a year.

My husband and I have been kicking around the idea of selling everything within the next three years and just living off his retirement as we tramp around the world. I have no idea if this is possible but we are both discouraged that hard work gets neither of us anywhere so we are at the point of just trying to make one of our daydreams come true.
We are just waiting until our youngest daughter starts college.

Oh you should totally do it. Once you are plugged into the traveler network it's really easy to live for cheap while you are globe hopping. You'd probably be amazed at how little money you spend on the road. People think of travel as an expensive thing because they are conditioned by our two weeks of vacation society to think that. I spend way less money monthly when traveling than I do if I'm living in a city. If you have a hard time envisioning how you can globe hop on the cheap, let me recoomend the book 'Tales of a Female Nomad' ( http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Female-Nomad...0609809547) How a woman used to living on something like 100,000 dollars a year (and feeling like she never had enough money) started traveling the world easily on something like an 8000 dollar a year budget and how it changed her life completely for the better. It gives a good idea of how possible it is to travel fufillingly on the cheap.

Thank you. I have seen the book at my local book store and considered getting it.

Sounds like a cool idea. But before you make any rash decisions, watch Lost in America, a 1985 film starring Albert Brooks.
And remember, as the film reminds us all too painfully, the nest egg is a sacred thing!

I have not seen the movie but I have heard about it. No problems about a nest egg because we don't have one and probably will never be able to have one. Every time we have started to save money, some emergency pops up. Unlike the movie, my husband and I do not have very lucrative jobs. After 26 years in the military, it seems like we have nothing except a lot of stuff that is falling apart. Besides, we sort of lived a nomadic lifestyle in the early parts of our marriage because the military kept moving us around the country.

I haven't seen that movie either, I just read the plot synopsis on wikipedia though and ha! What's the message? Stay in your safe boring job and don't try to actually live your life? It's better to be comfortable than adventurous? I mean, if you have basic budgeting skills (and don't waste money on something stupid like gambling) it's so easy to live on the road for cheaper than you can live in an apartment for sure.
