That's called "cherry-picking" and is common among theists who are embarrassed by their own fucking book and, oh....never mind. I see you've been banned.
I am actually glad most theists cherry pick their holy books. We don't want them going around stoning homosexuals or women who have committed adultery or people who work on the sabbath do we?
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...
To be fair, and to echo what you're saying,DiRNiS, we shouldn't bash them for it. It's like, they can't win whatever they do. If they take the whole lot literally they get bashed for it (fair enough) but if they cherry pick, as anyone with a sense of right and wrong would, they get bashed for that too.
Sucks to be them, huh?

They can stop believing in nonsensical garbage! Additionally, I'm sure many already think they are winning and/or have won.
That's the thing right there, they can't. But what I'm referring to is how they get bashed whether they follow the whole lot or they cherry pick. My wife is a christian and perhaps I'm being biased, but what I will say is that she's a great person and doesn't deserved to be bashed in such a facetious manner. I don't consider the whole area of following it all or cherry picking to be fair game in a discussion.

I don't consider the whole area of following it all or cherry picking to be fair game in a discussion. I don't see why it wouldn't be fair game. The whole issue at hand is why you believe what you believe. Either position is still using faith, a belief lacking evidentiary proof, and is very open to intellectual criticism. My mother is a believer and, although I do love her, I find her religious beliefs to be ridiculous. So, yes, I would say you are being biased. If your wife weren't a Christian would you still find this to be an issue? (July 27, 2010 at 7:45 pm)Facejacker Wrote: That's the thing right there, they can't. When it comes to winning, the wealthiest, most powerful always win. Look at the Roman Catholic Church. Their Pope Pious XII was on the front page of news papers blessing the Nazi troops along side Hitler with impunity and no subsequent punishment. Look at the Inquisition. It lasted 350 years with impunity on no subsequent punishment. Look at the institutionalized, organized reign of pedophilia the Catholic Church has enjoyed for centuries. Look at their current Pope and the records proving his previous Nazi affiliation and his involvement in covering up pedophilia in Germany. The Catholics accept him as infallible, which means he cannot err. What are the chances of prosecuting Ratzinger when he lives in his own country (the Vatican) where he is the theocratic ruler?
Religion is the most profitable industry in the world. Atheism does not provide much wealth and I don’t know of any Atheist willing to kill and die for their leaders and their beliefs. We can always win the logical arguments, but they will always prevail by force. |
