I had two uncles neither believed in God, they didn't go to church. They were good family men and good providers. They didn't hate religion they just didn't want to hear it.
Because it corrupts the morals of people, urges them to intellectual complacency, and uses an unappealable "authority" to justify the worst atrocities. It's a scam to separate the naive from their money at the same time it controls their behavior to ensure that the cash flow to the preachers doesn't stop.

That's how the catholic church is so rich and has all that money.

That's how the catholic church is so rich and has all that money. When I was young I attended a Baptist church, later they put me in a Catholic school. It was a rude awakening. I learned real fast nuns and priest were not what they claimed they were. I still have no use for them, I don't hate all religions. There is good and bad in everything.

Seriously? You have to ask?
Let's start with the big stuff like say, violence. We have Islamic suicide bombers, violence against gays and Jews, Jewish violence against Islam, racist Identity Christians in the U.S. who have been known to resort to violence, not to mention Evangelical groups ugly track record with abortion clinics.
Then there's racially driven prejudice against gays, various races, various other religions, atheists, and heretics. Which leads not only to violence and immoral laws, but also to parents disowning their children or not allowing some people to marry, or other to attend marriage ceremonies.
Then despite the violence and the prejudice there's the unwarranted claim to the moral high ground.
Then there's the blinkered stupid attempts to disrupt scientific education and deny fact wherever the evidence contradicts religious belief.
On a smaller scale, I find even the relatively benignly religious to be annoying simply because they not only insist on inserting this god character into everything but also assuming I agree. Oh and my favorite, "You don't believe in god? But I thought you were such a good person." And if you don't understand why "I'll pray for you" can be insulting, you aren't paying attention.
And to top it all off, most of the religious in the world are either not persecuted or even more likely are in the majority in their particular country, and yet cry discrimination and martyrdom loudly and often. Purleeese.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

I don't hate religion. Religion can be very good for some people; however, it can also be used to hurt people.
Humans are inclined to put each other in groups of us and them. When we view another group as 'the other', it becomes easier to dehumanize them and to then mistreat them. I think that this is a tendency that all humans probably have to fight against but religion makes it easier to put people into groups.
My family would probably describe me in a similar way to your uncles. Away from this forum, I rarely argue. I have had friends express disbelief that I ever get angry(I do, just not often). I come to this forum to debate and discuss with people who I assume are tough enough to take heated interactions.

More or less i have a issue with people who exploit it. More and more people that do things to kids hide in religion like the catholic church. People who do things to kids use god and the bible and religion as a blanket to cover shit up and well it worked and i mean it worked because the catholic church got dragged into the light because fucking pastors were molesting kids. More or less religion needs to be an adult thing because of whats happening.

There may be good and bad in everything, but proportions aren't the the same. Organized religion features a pretty negative ratio, I think.

I'll meet you at the top of the World Trade Center and we can discuss this.
Oh wait....
Religion (not all religions or religious people) leads to real world, negative consequences.
The teaching of pseudoscience in public school science class, the attempt to pass laws based on 'scriptural morality', the impeding of science (stem cell research), persecution of minorities, individuals blowing themselves up in public places, starting wars in the name of a god, honor killings, and more.
Is that enough?
But at the very least, I'd much rather live in a society where people base their important decisions on reality, and not Bronze and Iron Age mythology. The chances are much greater they would make better decisions.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I used to think like you.
Then on 9/11 I was taught what properly motivated theists can do.
Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Scientologist they are all the same.

Scapegoating religion misses the problem. Which is what you're supposed to think.
