RE: The book of Genesis is poetic?

So, if it is a hymn/poem dedicated to god then
1) Did god write a poem to himself? HE is a loser and needs to get a life
2) Did some mortal men write it without the consent of god? Then what is the validity of it?
3) If men wrote it with HIS guidance, then why use wrong facts? Either HE is a douche or a moron
4) Did god intentionally write confusing poetry? He is a douche, also doesn't know what poetry is...

Robvalue has an excellent point, the arrogance of personal interpretation I find galling. It raises questions about the motivation(s) for doing so. Particularly of the financial kind. Also, interpretation shaded to reflect particular prejudices (those damn Midianites !!) without Biblical basis for doing so (sorry Hamites !!) is odious.
Curiously, I have different 'rules' for the non-believers. Plausible interpretations of Bible scripture that are tough to comply with, expensive, stupid, contradictory, vile, vicious, ghastly, cruel, and/or bizarre the Christers are stuck with. Not sorry at all for making them defend every toxic jot and tittle and to shame them into complying with every inconvenient, uncomfortable, ludicrous, and awful verse.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Blackout nailed it concisely.
The flack from the System's spokesmen has caused a large number of Christians to water down Genesis.
A reaction to evolution.
Those who have a firm knowledge of both have thrown Darwin under the bus.
Lots of them are on Youtube.

He is gone now, but his vids live on.

Your observation is correct. If you turn to Christ's teachings on the matter it is clear He considered these to be literal days in the creation account.

It's actually a lot easier and safer to interpret the bible as a non believer. You are interpreting it as an historical document (or some version of) as in trying to determine what the writers were thinking, what really happened and what didn't, what their motivations were, and how the story could have mutated over time. Once you accept it was just a bunch of dumb ass men who wrote it, you can learn a lot more from it I think.

Today someone told me that one possible reason for the placement of the serpent in the Genesis 3 story was to portray the Hebrews' pagan neighbors in a negative light. I thought that was interesting considering the apparent popularity of snake figures and deities in ancient cultures:

The title needs a slight tweak:
"The book of Genesis is pathetic?"
