I got worried for a minute when I read this topic...
...Then I read the news article and realized it's "direct to DVD." We're safe. Nobody watches that crap. The only people who are going to watch it are the fundie Christians who already think this kind of crap happens every day.
I like the way you think!
...But please stop thinking, it's not you.
Watch "hogfather" that'll cheer you all up.[/b]

Well, you know, "direct to DVD" doesn't always mean the same thing as "going to die unwatched and alone in the basements of the really dedicated fans" anymore. Particularly when something like this is going to raise enough eyebrows to become instantly famous. It's already on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l4n2dPT5...=recentlik (I completely agree with Cenk's assessement, though I doubt I'll spend money to see it. ... if it were free... I might consider it.) And where I initially found it was my regular routine through my usual news outlet. Honestly, you could have said the same thing for Ben Stein's "No Intelligence Allowed" and it would have been true (despite appearing in theaters), but it didn't pass by like a fart in the wind, but it did linger as bad odor it was and it was very much in the public eye. Luckily, most people were smarter than that movie but I can't say that its existance those who do actual evolutionary science. ... I suppose though I should characterize my own opinion on this - I could honestly care less about the movie itself. If anything, I suppose I'm hoping that this movie causes actual atheists make themselves visible while this movies splashes around to dispel the inevitable ignorance about atheism that this movie is going to promote upon release, particularly for atheists who live in areas where this ignorance runs rampant. I think this is less worse than Bill O'Reily's jihad against people going agaisnt the christian tradition (this movie is basically a movie of that, I think), but I suppose what really does concern me is the damage this could do considering that we're already a persecuted minority in this country in many areas.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925 Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan |
