During my year in a US high school I hung with some nerds and band people, but also with some others. Stereotypes did not always apply. We had both some varsity footballers as well as weed smoking metal heads who were into maths and science like me. In my german schools I was close friends with very different individuals, from aspie trekkies to womanizing mountain bikers, and weed smoking metal heads(hmm at least one constant...). I'm like that...

Sportos, mostly (I did rugby and boxing at school).
After school hours, I spent most of my time with degenerate musicians and women of relaxed virtue.

I went to two high schools. The first I attended freshman and soph years, the second my junior year, and then returned to the old school for senior year.
I hated high school. The first one, PRHS in California, was a shithole of parochial idiots who hadn't seen the county line, much less the rest of the world. I definitely cottoned to the outcasts there ... they beat the cud-chewin' FFA assholes and jocks by a mile. The place was so bad that I quit the football team in disgust over these little twats who were beholden to conformity and couldn't take a hit, on the field, in the mouth, or in a discussion. Namby-pambies.
My junior year, I moved down to Ventura County. It was a better scene, mainly because I started my first band. Girls and good amounts of recreational drugs followed, and no one gave me shit for being different, because there was always a good time to be had.
Funny thing, when I moved back up to Paso Robles for my senior year, all the bumpkins who'd hated me for being not from Paso Robles were now very ready to look up to me because I had been on an adventure and returned alive ... as if I hadn't been that way before. Shallow little pricks who'd scrapped with me two years before were now trying to be all buddybuddy because LA was cool and I had lived near it. Fuck them.

The popular kids at my school were mostly shallow and stupid. It was an honor not to be a part of them.
yeah, but at least I won't be bullied everyday at school.

There are other ways to prevent bullying besides becoming popular.

My high school had around 2500 students so it fractured into many more groups than popular and nerd. I hung you with the sci-fi/SCA crowd, the debate team, and the JCL (Junior Classical League)---there wasn't much overlap between those groups.

Graduated in '02. My class was some freak of nature. The cliques existed, but we all hung out. It wasn't the school, it was just my class. My best friends were jocks, musicians, burn outs, straight A students, nerds, geeks, etc. I was among the metal heads/musicians, myself, but we all shared at least some interest in everything.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:

I went to a small town high school. The girls were cliquey amongst themselves, but that didn't go any further. I was perceived as funny (but not the class clown) so I was on pretty good terms with most of my classmates. I was seen as capable of giving an instructor a rough go sometimes, and that went over pretty well. I did band 1 year, but never did sports.
I had a semi-girlfriend junior and senior year, we passed notes once in a while. I liked double dating with another couple from another school. Took me a while to realize I had a crush on him. Had a crush on a few male teachers too. Nothing came of that.
I found out many years later there was another gay in my class. I met his high school boyfriend (attended a different school) at a gay bar in a larger city not too terribly far from here. My jaw hit the floor, that's for sure.
I freely admit being terribly naive about the gay world (high school was early 70s for me) and there wasn't anyone to talk too.
I had some difficulties with some of the upper classmen who were 'jocks' but that was par for everyone.
Like most gay teens of that era, I hit upon the only possible solution, get the hell out my rural backwater ASAP, and I did. Within 5 months of graduation, I was in a gay bar, and that's a different story.

I did not hang with anyone. I was the lone wolf.
