Russia and Ukraine
RE: Russia and Ukraine
That land mass is big enough that Putin's people, whomever they are, are expected to eke out a living after a nuclear war. Low population density and a large land mass might lead in that direction. The same can't be said for the US, Canada, or western Europe.

They might be expected to do so, but doing that will be a hard slog after a nuclear shower. They might grow irradiated crops, but Putin knows as well as we do that an atomic war will fuck any world he might want to rule.

2 boomers throwing 24 Tridents apiece, each carrying 6 or 8 warheads --  hope your railroads and airports get those Putinites out to the hinterlands. Not to mention the other 20 or so SSBNs floating around, or the missiles or bombers that have survived Russia's repeated threats that have not unfolded:

^ This.

Putin is not going to nuke a NATO country. It costs him nothing to run this bluff, and if it causes paralysis in Europe and NATO...

There is a 1983 movie called “The Day After” whose director is Nicholas Meyer. No one really survives a nuclear war. Half of us will be dead within hours (even minutes). The other half within a few weeks or within a few months or so. And that includes Putin and his entourage.

You can think of it this way: Would Donald Trump do this if he could?

Technically, do you sink a submarine or just stop it from resurfacing?

Depends.

He chickened out on an airstrike that he called, at the lats minute, and recalled it. So, I really doubt that he would call for nuclear war.

Russian threats of nuclear attacks always put me in mind of those blowhards you see in pubs who, after a few drinks, immediately go into Superman mode and want to fight everybody. It never seems to happen.

Israel has just decided to provide “Code Red” missile detection systems to Ukraine. This is not the Iron dome but a radar tech that detects when a missile has been fired in some place and therefore give precious time to local civilians to go to shelters.

To me this means that Russia was involved in some degree in attacks that happened in October seventh. (Russia has too much presence in places like Syria and Lebanon and has close ties with Iran as well. So they wouldn’t risk angering Russians if they were not sure of this)  Cool

The Russian Navy has added another submarine to its fleet:

Quote:Ukrainian forces say they struck a Russian warship with highly advanced sea drones in the Black Sea, the latest blow to Russia’s navy in the war.

The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine said in a Telegram post the Russian patrol ship Sergei Kotov was attacked by five drones in the waters near the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

The Ukrainian intelligence agency also shared what it said was audio of Russian officers discussing the destruction of the ship and a video of the ship appearing to explode.

Special Ukrainian forces attacked the Sergei Kotov on Monday night with Magura V5 naval drones, according to Ukraine.

“The cost of the sunken ship is about 65 million dollars,” Ukrainian intelligence officials said in another post.

There was no immediate word from Russia’s Defense Ministry on the attack.

Ukraine has inflicted heavy losses on Russia in the Black Sea, driving the Russian navy out of the western parts of those waters.

The U.S. estimated last month that Russia has lost 20 medium-to-large ships in the Black Sea in the fighting.
